Fluke adds connected underground utility tracing

Fluke has launched SmartTrace for connected underground utility location work. The system combines tracing hardware with PointMan mapping and documentation for buried asset management.

Fluke Corporation has launched the SmartTrace 2082 Series of Underground Locators, a connected utility tracing system designed to identify, map, and document buried assets.

The SmartTrace system locates underground cables and pipes, providing information on position, depth, and path before excavation work begins. It is designed to identify unknown assets, reduce the risk of utility strikes, and support field teams working around buried infrastructure.

The system also supports fault detection on assets in direct contact with the ground, including ground faults, sheath faults, and coating defects on pipelines or cables. By locating where metallic conductors touch earth or where leakage currents occur, SmartTrace gives maintenance teams a clearer route to fault isolation and repair.

SmartTrace detects assets by injecting signals into buried services at depths of up to 6m. Bluetooth connectivity allows the locator to pair with the PointMan app, enabling users to map and document utility locations on a smartphone with geolocation data.

Sanid Usanovic, Senior Technical Application Manager at Fluke Corporation, said: “Accidental damage to underground utilities remains a serious challenge, contributing to approximately 60,000 utility ‘hits’ annually during digging in the United Kingdom.

“SmartTrace represents the next step in digital utility management — bringing real-time accuracy and connected intelligence to one of the most critical stages of any project. By combining Fluke’s precision locating technology with the PointMan app, workers can now map, track, and verify underground assets with confidence, reducing risks, preventing costly disruptions, and driving measurable efficiency gains on every site.”

The series includes a CAT IV 600V-rated transmitter, selectable frequencies, and automatic function selection based on connected accessories. The Premium Kit adds mapping flags, a spray canister stick, an A-Frame, and a Signal Clamp, supporting marking, documentation, and detection where direct electrical contact is not available.

When used with the transmitter, the A-Frame enables sheath or ground fault detection. Product information is available through the Fluke SmartTrace locator range.
