Greek TSO IPTO has announced operation of the interconnection between Crete and Attica, bringing the former into the national electricity system.

The operation of the ultra-high voltage direct current (HVDC) Attica-Crete electrical interconnection began successfully on Saturday 24 May, with the transmission of DC electricity through a project constructed by Ariadne Interconnection, a subsidiary of IPTO.

The trial operation period is expected to last throughout the summer months.

The 1GW project had a budget of €1.1 billion ($1.3 billion) and uses VSC (voltage source converter) technology in the converter stations. 500kV submarine cables were laid at depths of up to 1,200 meters, which IPTO says makes it one of the deepest interconnections in the world.

According to IPTO in a release, Crete was first interconnected with the Peloponnese in 2021, using alternating current technology. Thus, says the company, the operation of the second interconnection is a milestone. In combination with the interconnection via the Peloponnese, the electrical isolation of the largest Greek island is completely lifted, making it an energy hub.

The Crete-Attica electrical interconnection consists of many large subprojects with contractors including some of the largest companies in the field such as Siemens, TERNA, Nexans, Prysmian, NKT and Hellenic Cables.

It was completed in 4.5 years, when similar projects by European Operators took over 7 years, adds IPTO.

Commenting in a release was Greek minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou: “We are inaugurating a new era on the energy map of Greece.

“The operation of the Attica-Crete electrical interconnection is a significant technological achievement and national success, connecting the largest island of the country with the backbone of the National Electricity System.

“Through this underwater energy bridge, which was constructed quickly and with the most modern means, Crete becomes a central pillar for the country’s energy transition, offering significant environmental, economic and social benefits for all.”

Said president and CEO of IPTO, Manos Manousakis: “The energy union of Crete with Attica, a vision of decades, has become a reality by IPTO and our subsidiary Ariadne Interconnection.

“The operation of the interconnection opens a new chapter for the energy security of the island. It is a technical feat that places the Operator at the forefront, at an international level, in complex and high-tech electricity transmission projects.

“In addition to the construction of the project, its operation encountered significant challenges, as the tests were carried out in conditions of high RES penetration and with absolute safety for the electrical system.”

The Crete-Attica electricity interconnection is co-financed by the Operational Program YMEPERAA (ESRF 2014-2020) and by the ‘Environment and Climate Change’ of the ESRF 2021 – 2027 up to the amount of €535.5 million ($607.5 million).
