Polish energy company Enea Operator has signed agreements with three transformer manufacturers to the value of PLN444 million (€106.8 million; $111.1 million) to instal 129 high-power transformers.

Three companies entered the tender to produce devices according to the instructions, with which the company has just signed agreements. These include Fabryka Transformatorów w Żychlinie, Power Engineering Transformatory and ZREW Transformatory.

The transformers, ranging from 25 to 40MVA, will be installed in high-voltage stations to medium voltage (HV/MV) substations.

The undertaking will allow Enea Operator to increase the potential of connecting new customers and renewable energy producers.

The replacement of the transformers is expected to be complete by 2028.

Commenting in a release was Bogumiła Strzelecka, vice president of Network Infrastructure at Enea Operator: “This year we want to instal fourteen such devices, most of them in the area of operation of the Szczecin Branch.

“Transformers that have been designated for replacement—either initially or as part of rotation—will be either decommissioned or repaired for further operation on the network, based on their technical condition assessment.”

New devices and those obtained through rotation and secondary redistribution will ensure the implementation of issued connection conditions and already signed connection agreements. They will also increase the possibilities of using energy from renewable energy sources.

Importantly, it is expected that an area monitoring system (OMT) will be installed on several dozen transformers, which will indicate the dynamic load capacity of transformers (DOT).

The delivered units will also be equipped with additional diagnostic equipment collecting signals and information that will ultimately allow for active management of the technical condition of transformers, including monitoring devices for gas content in oil, transformer oil parameters, technical condition of bushing insulators and technical condition of the on-load tap changer.

Enea Operator announced a tender for the purchase and replacement of transformers in October last year.
