State Grid Jiangsu tests bus-based V2G as policy pushes integration

State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power, a power supply company under the State Grid Corporation umbrella, launched a vehicle to grid (V2G) interaction test as local and national policy pushes for the tech’s development and integration with the power system.

The test, conducted in collaboration with local bus operators, saw V2G conducted in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, to pool more resources for the flexible operation of the power grid.

The test involved two new energy buses, which discharged electricity to the grid continuously for one hour, achieving a maximum discharge power of 100kW and a cumulative discharge of 67kWh, sufficient to power five households for three consecutive hours.

According to the State Grid supply company, the test was conducted following thorough research with plans to promote V2G technologies across the province, exploring research and application for industrial vehicles, taxis and other types of new energy vehicles, contributing to the construction of a new-type power system.

In 2023, the local government issued the province’s first supporting policy encouraging the development of new energy vehicles, novel energy storage systems and the demonstration of V2G interactions, explicitly offering incentives to new energy vehicles participating in V2G discharge to the grid.

According to the company, driven by this policy local new energy vehicles have shown increasing enthusiasm for engaging in V2G interactions.

In January 2024, China’s state planner National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) released reform recommendations on how China, the largest EV market globally, can optimally integrate EVs into power grid planning.

Their reforms included six specific recommendations, including the promotion of research on core technologies of V2G interaction and carrying out demonstrations of two-way charging and discharging models that integrate new energy vehicles.

Commenting on the V2G Jiangsu test in a release was Jiang Renxin, director of the Marketing Department at State Grid Zhenjiang Yangzhong Power Supply Company:

“Compared to ordinary new energy vehicles, buses offer advantages such as larger single-charge discharge capacity, stable charging times and scalability, providing a novel technological approach to green transportation, clean energy consumption and power supply security in the region.”
