500,000 smart meters for Kuwait’s phase 2 rollout

Kuwait telco stc is to supply 500,000 smart electricity meters to the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy (MEW) for the second phase rollout.

Along with the smart meters, stc is contracted to supply components including circuit breakers and transformers.

The smart meter initiative, which is expected to lead to a nationwide rollout by around mid-2025, is stated to be one of the largest in Kuwait’s energy and ICT sectors and is aimed to facilitate efficient energy consumption, the streamlining of operational processes and enhancement of the sustainability of the nation’s energy infrastructure.

“Our collaboration with stc marks a significant milestone in Kuwait’s journey towards a smarter, more efficient energy infrastructure,” commented Maha Al-Asousi, Undersecretary of the MEW.

“The introduction of these advanced smart meters will not only enhance our ability to manage and conserve energy, but will contribute to building a smart energy grid by periodically sending usage readings and issuing monthly bills to customers to avoid late payments.

“This project reflects our commitment to integrating state-of-the-art technology to manage the country’s energy needs and support its long-term sustainability goals.”

Utilising a state-of-the-art electronic platform, the smart meters will automatically collect readings and notify the MEW’s support team of any system failures in real time.

Additionally, the platform should provide detailed analytics and reporting capabilities, offering insights into consumption patterns and potential areas for further energy-saving measures.

Muataz Abdullah Aldharrab, CEO of stc, added that with this major project win, the company can utilise its knowledge and expertise in the energy and ICT sectors to enhance the electrical infrastructure in the country.

“The phase II implementation of smart electricity meters is crucial for achieving a connected, efficient, and sustainable future for Kuwait. The phase 2 rollout follows the phase 1 rollout of the current initiative involving around 200,000 smart meters.

The phase 2 tender also included the supply of 200,000 smart water meters but there is no report of if or to whom this has been awarded.
