Tecnimont has secured approximately €110 million of new awards and additional engineering work across South America, Europe, and Asia, with gas processing and LNG developments forming the principal disclosed elements.
MAIRE says its Tecnimont engineering and construction business will undertake early engineering for a large-scale gas-monetisation project in South America and front-end engineering design for an LNG plant in Asia.
The €110 million total also includes additional works on existing contracts within MAIRE’s Integrated E&C Solutions business. Individual values for the South American project, Asian FEED package, and other additions have not been disclosed.
Tecnimont’s South American scope covers engineering required to define the project’s technical framework ahead of later development. The proposed plant would form part of midstream infrastructure used to process natural gas before liquefaction and export to international LNG markets.
The development has not reached final investment decision. MAIRE says that, subject to FID, the project is expected to progress into an engineering, procurement, and construction phase, potentially extending Tecnimont’s involvement considerably beyond the current early-stage contract.
That route from early engineering into EPC is commercially valuable, but it is not automatic. Project owners still have to resolve financing, permits, commercial agreements, feedstock, market assumptions, and final sanction before committing the much larger sums associated with construction.
Early engineering nevertheless places a contractor close to the technical definition of a project. Process configuration, plant capacity, site conditions, utilities, equipment requirements, constructability, environmental systems, and execution risks are progressively developed before an EPC package is awarded.
The Asian contract is further along the design sequence. Tecnimont has been selected by an unnamed Tier-1 customer to carry out FEED for an LNG plant, although MAIRE has not identified the country, customer, capacity, or expected construction timetable.
FEED normally develops sufficient engineering detail to support more reliable capital-cost estimates, procurement planning, project schedules, safety studies, and subsequent EPC tendering. For LNG facilities, that can include gas treatment, liquefaction technology, compression, refrigeration, utilities, storage, loading systems, power supply, flare systems, and interfaces with upstream infrastructure.
Those decisions increasingly determine whether an LNG development remains commercially viable as construction costs rise. Compressor configuration, heat integration, modularisation strategy, electrical loads, site layout, marine facilities, and long-lead equipment choices can alter both capital requirements and project schedules before major construction begins.
Equipment availability has become particularly important on large energy and process projects. Compressors, turbines, cryogenic equipment, electrical systems, specialist valves, pressure vessels, and other engineered items can carry procurement periods measured in years, forcing developers to make key technical selections relatively early.
The South American project adds another complication because gas has to be conditioned before liquefaction. Water, carbon dioxide, sulphur compounds, heavier hydrocarbons, and other constituents may need to be removed or controlled to protect downstream cryogenic equipment and meet product specifications.
Feed composition, pressure, temperature, liquids recovery, and compression therefore influence the eventual liquefaction plant before the gas reaches it. Weak integration between upstream treatment and downstream LNG equipment can leave an expensive facility operating below design performance even when individual process units function correctly.
Tecnimont has a substantial existing workload against which the new awards will be delivered. MAIRE reported an Integrated E&C Solutions backlog above €15 billion earlier this year, reflecting large orders across energy, chemicals, fertilisers, and other process industries.
The latest contracts are smaller than the group’s major EPC awards, but engineering studies occupy a different place in the project cycle. Their value lies partly in paid engineering hours and partly in establishing technical familiarity before customers decide who will execute later phases.
LNG remains an important part of that market despite uncertainty over the long-term role of natural gas in different economies. New liquefaction and export projects are progressing in regions with competitive feedstock or access to growing import markets, while operators are under pressure to reduce construction risk and the emissions intensity of production.
For engineering contractors, that means gas developments increasingly combine familiar process design with new requirements around electrification, carbon management, efficiency, methane emissions, digital control, and integration with changing power systems.
MAIRE has been expanding technology capability alongside its conventional engineering operation, but the 27 August awards remain principally an engineering workload story. Neither disclosed project should be presented as a Tecnimont EPC win until customers have taken the separate decisions required to reach that stage.
The distinction is useful in a sector where project announcements often run years ahead of physical construction. Early engineering establishes that developers are spending money on technical definition; FEED indicates a more mature design basis; final investment decision and EPC award are the points at which billions of capital expenditure begin to become considerably harder to reverse.
Tecnimont now has positions in two prospective LNG-related developments at different engineering stages. The €110 million package adds to its backlog immediately, while any larger construction opportunity remains dependent on decisions still to be taken by the project owners.
Engineering contractors make a substantial part of their living before the cranes arrive. These awards put Tecnimont inside the technical work that determines whether the cranes arrive at all.
