Sherwin-Williams upgrades water-based structural fire protection

Sherwin-Williams has launched upgraded water-based fire protection for structural steel. FIRETEX FX5092 combines lower VOC content with higher film builds and longer storage life.


Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine has launched FIRETEX FX5092, a water-based intumescent coating for internal structural steel that replaces the established FX5090 formulation with lower VOC content, higher achievable film builds, and a longer shelf life.

The coating provides up to 120 minutes of fire resistance for indoor environments classified up to C3 under ISO 12944-2. Sherwin-Williams also states that FX5092 gives three times better performance on thin hollow sections, widening the range of steelwork that can be protected under one material specification.

Higher film builds allow applicators to reach a required dry film thickness with fewer coats, reducing application time and labour where the tested specification permits it. The formulation has a VOC content of 0.66 g/l and a 12-month shelf life, twice the six months stated for FX5090.

The longer storage period has a practical effect on distributors and contractors using water-based materials. Application programmes can be disrupted by low temperatures, humidity, site sequencing, or delayed access to steelwork, leaving stock unused for longer than originally planned. Doubling shelf life gives more tolerance around those delays and leaves more usable product life after international transport.

Alex Tsiolas, fire protection portfolio manager at Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, said: “It brings improved coverage, lower dry film thickness requirements, reduced VOC content, and a longer shelf life, delivering real efficiency gains across the chain.”

Intumescent coatings protect structural steel by expanding when exposed to heat and forming an insulating char. That layer slows the rate at which the underlying steel reaches temperatures at which its load-bearing capacity is materially reduced, buying time for the structure to meet the fire-resistance period specified for the building.

Performance depends on more than the coating name. Section geometry, section factor, required fire period, primer compatibility, surface preparation, applied thickness, environmental conditions, and inspection all affect the installed system. Thin hollow sections can be demanding because they expose a relatively large heated perimeter compared with the mass of steel available to absorb heat.

A formulation that covers a wider range of those sections can simplify specification and site logistics. Contractors may be able to reduce product changes across a structure, while inspectors have fewer coating systems and associated thickness schedules to manage. The benefit is administrative as well as physical: fewer materials mean fewer batches, storage requirements, and application instructions moving through the project.

Sherwin-Williams has retained the application process familiar to existing FX5090 users, limiting the operational change required for contractors already set up for the earlier water-based product. FX5092 is also available through NBS Source, allowing architects and engineers to access specification information through an established digital construction platform.

The lower VOC figure positions the product for projects pursuing environmental assessment schemes such as LEED and BREEAM, although a coating contributes only one part of a building’s overall environmental assessment. For applicators and building occupants, reduced solvent emissions are also relevant to odour and indoor air quality during and after installation.

The product is intended for a wide range of internal steelwork, including commercial and institutional buildings, hospitals, transport terminals, food and beverage plants, pharmaceutical facilities, data centres, and warehouses. Sherwin-Williams also promotes the smooth finish for exposed structural steel where the fire-protection layer remains visible as part of the finished interior.

FX5092 follows the company’s introduction of FIRETEX FX1008 for solvent-based on-site fire protection. The two products address different application conditions, giving specifiers water- and solvent-based routes within the same passive fire-protection range rather than suggesting that one formulation is suitable for every environment.

Sherwin-Williams also says UK production supports flexibility around supply requests, adding a domestic manufacturing element to a product aimed primarily at specification and application on construction projects.

The engineering obligation remains unchanged once a product reaches site. The specified dry film thickness still has to match the member and fire-resistance requirement, application conditions must remain within the manufacturer’s limits, and the completed coating must be inspected before it can be treated as part of the building’s fire strategy.

FX5092 therefore improves several measurable parts of the installation equation — 0.66 g/l VOC content, a 12-month shelf life, higher film builds, and up to two hours of fire resistance — without changing the basic discipline of passive fire protection. The coating can reduce coats and inventory complexity, but only a correctly specified and verified system protects the steel beneath it.
