ROTOCON expands German printing machinery base

ROTOCON has expanded its European manufacturing base near Hamburg, Germany. The 3,000m²-plus Ahrensburg facility adds assembly, testing, demonstration, training, and technical support capacity for printing and finishing machinery.


ROTOCON has relocated its European headquarters and demonstration centre to a larger facility in Ahrensburg, near Hamburg, increasing the space available for machinery assembly, testing, customer demonstrations, training, and technical support. The new base provides more than 3,000m² of production and office space for the company’s flexographic printing and label-converting operations.

The relocation increases the amount of final engineering work that can be carried out at the European operation before equipment reaches a customer’s factory. ROTOCON retains control over machine concept and customisation, assembly, integration, testing, and quality control while working with an international network of suppliers for electronics, precision components, and machine parts.

That manufacturing model makes final integration particularly important. A modern narrow-web printing line is not simply a row of print stations: it can combine servo-controlled web handling, curing, inspection, die cutting, slitting, rewinding, embellishment, and other finishing processes within one production system. Mechanical, electrical, and software interfaces have to function together if the line is to maintain registration and material control at production speed.

ROTOCON’s flexographic press range covers web widths from 350mm to 660mm, with models capable of operating at up to 200m/min. Its RSI slitting, inspection, and rewinding platform is offered across similar web widths and is rated at up to 300m/min, illustrating the range of machinery that the expanded European site may be required to demonstrate, integrate, and support.

Those headline speeds are only part of the engineering problem. Web-fed manufacturing depends on stable tension, alignment, registration, curing, cutting, and winding across materials that can behave differently under acceleration and processing. A machine that reaches its theoretical maximum speed but produces excessive start-up waste or requires lengthy changeovers is of limited value to a converter handling short and frequently changing jobs.

The demonstration centre therefore gives ROTOCON a controlled environment in which customers can assess machinery before installation. Substrates, repeat lengths, finishing operations, inspection arrangements, and workflow can be tested without taking a production line out of service. That is increasingly important as converters are asked to manage shorter runs, more variants, and tighter quality requirements without sacrificing throughput.

Training occupies a similar role. Servo-controlled presses and finishing systems have made machinery more automated, but they have not removed the need for experienced operators. Staff still need to understand web tension, curing, ink behaviour, substrate response, tooling condition, and registration while also working through software interfaces, stored parameters, inspection systems, and fault diagnostics.

ROTOCON has already been supplying European converters with increasingly complex configurations. A recent RFP 350S installation for Germany’s Bube Concept combines six flexographic printing stations, UV LED curing, web cleaning, corona treatment, die cutting, web guiding, and video inspection, alongside associated finishing equipment. Such installations explain why additional assembly and demonstration space matters more than a conventional showroom.

The Ahrensburg operation also strengthens the service side of the machinery business. Printing and converting equipment can remain in production for many years, which makes technical support, spare parts, operator knowledge, and troubleshooting part of the commercial proposition. A customer may buy a press once but depend on its supplier repeatedly when production changes or an unexpected fault interrupts output.

ROTOCON says the new facility will support customers across Europe, the Americas, and Africa. That geographical reach gives the German site a role beyond its immediate domestic market, particularly where prospective customers want to see equipment operating before specifying a line or where training is needed before machinery is shipped to a plant elsewhere.

The company has not disclosed an employment increase or a quantified rise in annual machine-building capacity associated with the move. It is therefore more accurate to describe Ahrensburg as an expansion of operational capability than as a conventional factory investment measured by additional units per year.

That distinction does not make the investment insignificant. Machinery suppliers frequently win or lose productivity at the integration stage, where components from different sources have to become one stable production system. More space for assembly, testing, training, and demonstration can reduce the number of problems that have to be solved after installation, when the customer’s raw materials and production schedule are already involved.

ROTOCON’s expanded German base is consequently an investment in the less visible end of machinery manufacturing. Customers will still judge the equipment on speed, quality, and flexibility, but those specifications have to survive assembly, commissioning, and daily use. A larger building does not make a press more precise by itself; it does provide more room to find out whether it is precise before the machine reaches the customer’s floor.
