Metso has agreed to acquire Valmet’s peristaltic hose pump and progressive cavity pump technologies, expanding its slurry-handling portfolio for mining and other demanding process industries.
The transaction includes related aftermarket spare-parts and service capabilities. The products are currently sold under the Flowrox brand and will be integrated into Metso’s pump portfolio after completion, which is expected on 1 October 2026. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
Production will transfer to Metso’s manufacturing facilities in Lappeenranta, Finland, together with personnel connected to the acquired activities. The integration therefore covers manufacturing knowledge and lifecycle support as well as product designs and commercial rights.
The acquired equipment addresses process duties where fluid behaviour and wear can make conventional pumping difficult. Peristaltic hose pumps move material through a flexible hose that is repeatedly compressed by the pumping mechanism, keeping the process medium largely contained inside the hose.
That configuration is suited to abrasive, corrosive, viscous, or crystallising slurries because wear is concentrated in a replaceable element rather than distributed across a larger number of wetted mechanical components. Typical mining duties include thickener underflow, filter feed, flocculant dosing, slurry sampling, and recirculation.
Progressive cavity pumps cover a different range of applications. A helical rotor turns inside a stator to create cavities that progress through the pump, moving material at a comparatively steady rate. Flowrox models are used for high-viscosity and abrasive media as well as chemical and dosing duties.
Neither technology replaces the centrifugal slurry pumps widely used for bulk transfer through mineral-processing plants. Their value lies in extending the range of duties that can be covered where solids concentration, viscosity, dosing accuracy, or wear behaviour makes another pump architecture preferable.
Metso already supplies slurry pumps alongside pipes, hoses, valves, hydrocyclones, optimisation services, and maintenance. Adding the Flowrox ranges allows the company to address more of the process route with its own equipment rather than leaving specialist applications outside the portfolio.
The installed base is commercially important. Mining and process equipment can remain in operation for many years, creating repeat demand for replacement wear parts, servicing, inspections, and upgrades after the initial capital sale. Metso says the acquired business has an established and growing installed population generating stable aftermarket revenue.
That lifecycle component fits the company’s broader service strategy. Equipment sales fluctuate with mining investment cycles and major project timing, whereas spare parts and maintenance are linked more closely to operating hours and installed assets. Increasing the number of machines supported by Metso therefore expands a revenue base that can continue long after the original transaction has closed.
Production transfer to Lappeenranta will require careful execution. Specialist pumps carry product-specific drawings, tolerances, elastomer selections, assembly procedures, quality controls, test requirements, and spare-parts inventories. Existing customers will expect components supplied after the transfer to remain interchangeable with equipment already operating in their plants.
Personnel moving with the business should help retain some of that process knowledge. The practical difficulty in industrial acquisitions often lies less in acquiring patents or brands than in preserving the engineering detail accumulated through years of troubleshooting unusual applications.
The Flowrox business also has a long Finnish industrial lineage. The brand emerged from operations associated with Larox before its pumps and valves activities subsequently became part of Neles and then Valmet. The latest deal transfers the pump technologies back into a group whose present minerals-processing portfolio incorporates the former Outotec operations.
History is secondary to the application economics. Slurry handling can be a disproportionately expensive source of downtime because abrasive materials accelerate wear, blocked or failed pumps interrupt downstream processes, and maintenance can require shutting sections of a plant that operate continuously.
A pump that costs relatively little beside a crusher, mill, or flotation circuit can therefore become critical to production availability. Equipment selection is driven by duty conditions and lifecycle cost rather than purchase price alone, particularly where maintenance access is difficult or an unplanned stoppage disrupts several connected process stages.
Metso recorded sales of approximately €5.3 billion in 2025, so the acquisition is not large enough to alter the scale of the group and has been described by the company as having no material impact on financial performance. Its industrial logic is narrower: fill portfolio gaps, consolidate manufacturing and engineering capability, and bring another specialist installed base into Metso’s aftermarket network.
Completion is scheduled for October. The immediate operational test will be a familiar one for industrial equipment acquisitions — move production, employees, documentation, and support into a new organisation without giving existing customers a reason to notice the change for the wrong reasons.
