Energy & Utility Skills has announced the establishment of the new National Skills Academy for Gas. This initiative promises to shape the future of the gas industry, forging a path of excellence and innovation towards net zero. The National Skills Academy for Gas is a pioneering industry-supported initiative dedicated to equipping the workforce with the knowledge, skills, and expertise necessary to meet the evolving demands of the gas industry. National Skills Academy for Gas is set to deliver a transformative impact for both the workforce and the industry in this exciting journey towards a greener, more sustainable future.

The National Skills Academy for Gas follows on from the well-established National Skills Academy for Power, and is a collaboration between Energy & Utility Skills, National Gas, Cadent Gas, SGN, Northern Gas Networks, Wales & West Utilities, Centrica, Phoenix Natural Gas, and Kier.

The National Skills Academy for Gas will develop targeted training programmes to support current and future skills needs identified by the gas industry, through the sharing of best practice and collaborating with key stakeholders and employers.

One of the key deliverables is ensuring networks are sufficiently skilled for the hydrogen transition. The National Skills Academy for Gas will initiate and operate a Hydrogen Network Group to implement a roadmap and develop the training infrastructure to support hydrogen transition across the gas transmission and distribution networks.

Stephen Barrett, Director of Membership and Strategic Engagement, Energy & Utility Skills, said; “The National Skills Academy for Gas is an exciting new initiative requested by the gas industry, to collaborate on the workforce development and skills required to support current and future industry needs. The National Skills Academy for Gas will engage with key stakeholders across all four nations to take a standardised approach to skills and competency development to ensure that strategic skills requirements are addressed throughout the UK’s gas industry.”
