GreenRoc drilling extends Amitsoq graphite mineralisation

GreenRoc has extended graphite mineralisation at its Amitsoq project northward. Fresh drilling adds geological, geotechnical, and groundwater data ahead of prefeasibility work on the Greenland critical-minerals development.


GreenRoc Strategic Materials has extended known graphite mineralisation by approximately 100–150 metres to the north-northwest at its Amitsoq project in South Greenland, with Phase III drilling adding data needed for resource evaluation, mine design, and planned prefeasibility work.

Seven holes have been completed from two drill pads during the current programme, which is targeting the northern extension of the project’s graphite orebodies. Step-out drilling from Pad 3 has confirmed continuation of the Lower Graphite Layer beyond the limits established during earlier drilling in 2021 and 2022.

Hole AM_DD_043 intersected the Lower Graphite Layer from 137.30 metres to 162.48 metres, giving an estimated true thickness of 21.4 metres. AM_DD_047 intersected the same layer from 182.08 metres to 204.94 metres, with an estimated true thickness of 13.1 metres.

Other Pad 3 holes returned narrower intersections. AM_DD_044 recorded an estimated true thickness of 3.0 metres and AM_DD_046 returned approximately 2.5 metres, while AM_DD_045 encountered only minor Upper Graphite Layer mineralisation and did not intersect the Lower Graphite Layer at its modelled position.

Those differences matter because the current programme is intended to refine the geological model rather than merely add drilling metres. The company believes the step-out results indicate potential to expand the existing resource, but that remains subject to assay results and confirmation by its independent Competent Person.

Sampling for geochemical assay and geotechnical laboratory testing is continuing. Two further holes are planned from Pad 2, positioned between the completed Pad 1 and Pad 3 locations, with drilling expected to resume in early October after helicopter availability delayed that part of the campaign.

Optional holes previously planned from a fourth pad are now expected to form part of a Phase IV drilling programme in 2027. Downhole televiewer work is also scheduled during October to provide additional structural information for geotechnical characterisation.

The programme goes beyond resource definition. Hydrogeological investigations have been completed in vertical holes AM_DD_039 and AM_DD_043 using packer testing and permanently installed vibrating-wire piezometers, with another piezometer planned for AM_DD_041.

Groundwater information becomes increasingly important as a mineral project moves towards engineering design. Mine geometry, excavation sequence, ground support, water ingress, pumping requirements, and environmental management all depend on understanding how the deposit behaves physically rather than simply calculating how much graphite is present.

GreenRoc expects the new geological, geotechnical, and hydrogeological information to contribute to a prefeasibility study planned to begin by the end of 2026. That stage should move Amitsoq towards more detailed assessments of mining method, processing configuration, infrastructure, operating costs, capital requirements, and development schedule.

The graphite project has acquired wider strategic importance as European policymakers attempt to diversify critical-material supply chains. Graphite is used extensively as the active material in conventional lithium-ion battery anodes, while much of the world’s processing capacity remains concentrated in China.

GreenRoc intends to develop more than a mine-and-concentrate operation. Its strategy includes downstream processing of Amitsoq material into higher-value anode products in Europe, potentially giving the project a role across a larger section of the battery-material value chain.

Amitsoq has already been designated an EU Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials Act. This week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also referenced the development during the announcement of a €200 million Global Gateway partnership package for Greenland covering critical raw materials alongside education, fisheries, hydropower, and communications infrastructure.

The €200 million figure applies to the wider Greenland partnership rather than representing a direct award to GreenRoc. The EU is, however, financing European Investment Bank advisory support for Amitsoq through the InvestEU Advisory Facility, giving the project institutional support as it moves through its preparatory stages.

Political backing can improve access to technical advice and finance, but it does not remove the engineering work between a mineral resource and a functioning industrial supply chain. Assays still have to confirm the latest intersections, geotechnical conditions have to support the mine design, and the economics must ultimately justify extracting and processing the material at commercial scale.

The present drill programme is useful because it addresses several of those questions at once. Extending mineralisation adds potential resource volume, while structural and groundwater investigations provide information needed to establish whether that material can be extracted safely and economically.

The remaining Pad 2 holes and October televiewer work should further tighten that picture before prefeasibility begins. For a project being promoted as part of Europe’s future battery-material supply chain, the next meaningful advance will come from turning strategic status and promising geology into an engineering design that can survive independent technical and financial scrutiny.
