EIB adds €20m financing for Burgenland wind and solar

The EIB has agreed further financing for Austrian renewable generation. Its additional €20m loan supports Burgenland Energie’s existing wind and solar programme, which targets substantial new capacity by 2030.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has agreed an additional €20 million loan for Burgenland Energie’s wind and solar development programme in eastern Austria. Announced on 13 October, the financing follows a €250 million EIB loan provided in 2025 for the same portfolio. It extends funding for existing plans rather than announcing a new generating facility.

Burgenland Energie aims to add up to 2,000MW of wind and photovoltaic capacity across approximately 40 sites by 2030, within a programme estimated at €1.5 billion. The EIB has separately supported €100 million of lending from Erste Bank and Landesbank Baden-Württemberg. These loans form part of the wider financing arrangements and are not evidence that an equivalent value of generating equipment has already been installed.

The utility says its renewable generation capacity has doubled over the past five years. It also estimates that the region’s energy independence has increased from 50% to approximately 75%, with a target of 100% by 2030. Those percentages describe the company’s assessment of regional progress; they do not indicate how much of the planned 2,000MW has entered service under the October agreement.

The additional loan is supported through the EU’s InvestEU programme and contributes to the objectives of REPowerEU. No separate turbine procurement, solar equipment award or grid connection milestone was identified with the financing announcement. The new commitment concerns capital for a renewable portfolio whose development plans were first outlined in 2025.
