Atos and National Grid launch Triton digital twin

National Grid and Atos launch a tool to enhance network planning. Triton offers long-term electricity demand forecasts, aiming to streamline investment and reinforcement decisions. It could significantly reduce analysis time, aiding faster decision-making amid rising electrification pressures.


National Grid, in collaboration with Atos, has introduced a new digital twin and data visualisation tool named Triton, designed to expedite electricity network planning. This development comes as the UK faces increasing electricity demand to achieve decarbonisation goals.

As the grid endures pressure from electrification, including electric vehicles, heat pumps, large industrial loads, and the rapid expansion of data centres, solutions like Triton are increasingly crucial. Although it will not eliminate the need for physical infrastructure expansion, Triton promises to accelerate the process from recognising demand to identifying investment priorities.

Triton provides a comprehensive view of anticipated electricity demand growth by mapping forecasts at grid supply points and transmission substations. The tool aims to direct investment and reinforcement to areas most likely to require upgrades.

By creating a digital replica of National Grid’s physical infrastructure and utilising underlying data, Triton can simulate network scenarios, potentially reducing the time needed for analysis and decision-making on network reinforcement by 70%.

If the projected 70% reduction in analysis time is realised, it could significantly impact network planning, which often becomes a bottleneck when projects accumulate. While it won’t address constraints such as planning permission, supply chain delays, or lead times for major equipment, it could allow decision-makers to move swiftly once engineering questions are resolved.

Our collaboration with Atos has produced a tool enabling National Grid to model scenarios for network expansion, ensuring a resilient, future-ready electricity network.”
