Salzgitter commissions Mülheim heavy-plate straightening machine

Salzgitter has commissioned a new hot straightening machine in Mülheim. The 1,100-tonne installation extends processing capability for thick, high-strength plate used in offshore wind foundations and other energy infrastructure.


Salzgitter AG has commissioned a new hot straightening machine at the Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech heavy-plate plant in Mülheim an der Ruhr, completing one of the site’s largest individual investments in more than 20 years. The 1,100-tonne installation expands the plant’s ability to process particularly thick, high-strength plate for markets including offshore wind infrastructure.

The machine was developed with Austrian engineering company Buma Engineering & Anlagenbau to meet the specific requirements of the Mülheim operation. Salzgitter describes the investment as a double-digit million-euro sum covering removal of the previous machine and installation of the larger replacement.

Hot straightening is a finishing stage used to bring rolled plate within the dimensional and flatness tolerances required by customers. Heavy plate can distort during rolling and cooling, while thicker and higher-strength grades require substantial controlled force if they are to be corrected without damaging the material or compromising the properties required for later fabrication.

The new machine gives Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech additional capability at that demanding end of the product range. The company has highlighted foundations and support structures for offshore wind turbines as an application, where large fabricated components require thick plate with predictable dimensions, mechanical properties, weldability, and surface condition.

The equipment itself weighs around 1,100 tonnes, making replacement inside an operating works a substantial industrial project. Salzgitter says the installation required several years of detailed planning before the old machine could be removed and the new equipment commissioned.

Special tracks were installed across the cooling beds to support the work, allowing the new foundation and installation route to be developed while the previous machine was being dismantled. The sequencing was intended to reduce disruption to the rest of the plant, with Salzgitter reporting only a brief shutdown for the final dismantling, installation, and commissioning work.

That constraint is typical of brownfield manufacturing investment. A new factory can be designed around the dimensions, loads, utilities, and material flows of modern machinery; an existing plant usually has to accommodate new equipment within buildings and process routes established around earlier generations of production technology.

Foundations, crane access, transport routes, electrical supplies, cooling systems, process interfaces, and downstream handling all have to be reconciled with equipment that may have been operating around the replacement area for decades. The engineering involved in fitting a new machine into an old production line can therefore be as important as the machine specification itself.

The investment also illustrates why steelmaking capability cannot be judged only at the furnace or rolling mill. Producing the required chemistry and mechanical strength is one part of the value chain; customers also need flatness, dimensional tolerances, inspection, documentation, surface quality, and material that behaves predictably when cut, formed, and welded.

If the finishing line cannot process the strongest or thickest grades reliably, the commercially usable product range is narrower than the metallurgical capability suggests. Downstream machinery such as straighteners therefore determines which markets the mill can actually serve at scale.

Offshore wind is one of the sectors pushing those requirements. Foundations and support structures use substantial quantities of heavy plate, while increasing turbine and structure dimensions place continuing demands on material specifications and fabrication. Larger projects do not translate automatically into thicker steel in every component, but they increase the importance of suppliers able to deliver large, tightly controlled plate products.

Salzgitter’s new machine is also relevant to the group’s wider investment in lower-carbon steelmaking. Decarbonising primary production through programmes such as SALCOS changes how steel is produced upstream, but the resulting material still has to pass through rolling, finishing, inspection, and fabrication processes before it can become an infrastructure component.

Investment in downstream capability therefore remains necessary even while the industry spends heavily on changing furnaces and reducing production emissions. A low-carbon slab that cannot be turned into the grade, thickness, flatness, and dimensions specified by the customer has limited commercial value.

Commissioning shifts the Mülheim programme from capital project to operating equipment. The next measures will be availability, repeatability, throughput, maintenance performance, and whether production teams can use the new capability consistently across different plate grades and dimensions.

The machine also has to earn the markets identified for it. Salzgitter says the investment improves access to new applications, particularly in energy infrastructure, but installed production capability does not itself guarantee orders. Offshore wind developers, fabricators, and other heavy-plate customers will decide whether the equipment earns its floor space.

For Mülheim, the immediate change is nevertheless tangible: an older production constraint has been replaced with a 1,100-tonne straightener capable of handling heavier and stronger plate. Steelworks have rarely lacked impressive machinery; the commercially useful part begins once that machinery starts producing material somebody has ordered.
