Innovate UK opens £1m manufacturing sensing pilot

Innovate UK has opened a £1m advanced manufacturing sensing pilot. The scheme targets UK SMEs developing measurement, instrumentation, and sensing technologies for automotive, aerospace, battery, space, and advanced-materials supply chains.


Innovate UK has opened a £1 million pilot to support small and medium-sized businesses developing measurement, instrumentation, and sensing technologies for advanced manufacturing supply chains.

The Advanced Manufacturing: Measurement and Sensing Pilot opened on 26 August and closes at 11am on 7 October. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, has allocated up to £1 million from the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chains programme, subject to receiving enough suitable applications.

The scheme is aimed at UK-registered micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises rather than large manufacturers or conventional collaborative R&D consortia. Each successful applicant must request exactly £80,420, comprising up to £75,000 of grant funding and £5,420 of Business Connect support, with the overall programme running for nine months.

Applicants must already be developing a technology, product, or service based on measurement, sensing, or instrumentation that addresses a specific manufacturing problem. Innovate UK has narrowed the eligible industrial base to automotive, aerospace, batteries, space, and commercial production of advanced materials, with proposed applications expected to improve productivity, resource efficiency, or resilience.

The competition is unusual in explicitly stating that it is supporting businesses rather than individual projects. A manufacturer seeking funding to develop a one-off technology for its own factory is outside scope, as are companies developing new or improved advanced materials themselves. Successful applicants are instead expected to demonstrate that their technology can become a scalable product or service sold to manufacturing customers in the UK and overseas.

That emphasis puts metrology and sensing into the part of manufacturing investment where relatively small devices can influence much larger production systems. Machining, forming, assembly, process control, condition monitoring, automated inspection, and predictive maintenance all depend on measurements being sufficiently accurate and repeatable for engineers to act on them.

The consequence of poor measurement is rarely confined to the sensor itself. An unstable reading can produce unnecessary process adjustments, allow a drifting machine to continue producing non-conforming parts, create false maintenance alarms, or conceal deterioration until equipment fails. As manufacturers automate more decisions, the quality of the underlying measurement becomes more important rather than less.

Industrial News has recently covered Metir’s move towards commercial deployment of field-ready PFAS monitoring, another example of measurement technology having to make the transition from controlled development into repeatable industrial use. The technical applications differ substantially, but both illustrate the same commercial hurdle: a measurement technique only becomes an industrial product when it can operate reliably outside the development environment.

Innovate UK’s pilot combines grant support with business-development assistance partly to address that gap. Successful companies will work with Innovate UK, Innovate UK Business Connect, and Innovate UK Business Growth on activities that can include peer networking, investor engagement, international market exploration, and development of a growth plan tailored to the business.

The commercial work is significant because qualification requirements vary sharply across the five target supply chains. An aerospace customer may require extensive evidence around traceability and process capability, while battery production brings different requirements around high-speed inspection, material consistency, electrical testing, and contamination control. Semiconductor and space-related manufacturing can impose still tighter demands on repeatability, calibration, cleanliness, and data integrity.

Small technology suppliers can therefore spend considerable time proving that a device works reliably in a customer’s environment after the underlying sensing principle has already been demonstrated. Ruggedisation, calibration procedures, communications interfaces, software integration, maintenance requirements, and manufacturing cost can all become barriers between a laboratory prototype and a product capable of supporting serial production.

The funding rules reinforce the UK industrial focus. Supported activity must be carried out in the UK, the applicant must intend to exploit the results in the UK, and most of the funding must be spent domestically. Companies can use subcontractors, including overseas suppliers where justified, but the core commercialisation activity is intended to build UK capability.

The timetable moves quickly after the October deadline. Applicants selected for the next stage are scheduled to receive invitations to interview in November, with final notifications due on 18 December. Funded activity must begin by 1 March 2027 and finish no later than 30 November 2027.

The fixed £80,420 package means the pilot will not finance large-scale factory installations, and it is unlikely to transform a capital-intensive sensing business on its own. Its value is more targeted: helping smaller suppliers move a technically credible product towards the qualification, customer access, investment, and commercial structure required to scale.

Manufacturing digitalisation has produced no shortage of software layers promising better decisions from factory data. Those decisions remain dependent on the physical measurements entering the system. Innovate UK’s pilot is modest in financial scale, but its focus is on the less fashionable part of industrial intelligence — establishing whether the data coming from the machine can be trusted before software starts doing clever things with it.
