Contrinex launches ultra-compact weld-immune flat sensor

Contrinex has expanded its weld-immune portfolio with miniature sensors. The new Ultra Weld Miniature Flat Pack targets space-constrained welding cells where heat, spatter, and impact routinely destroy conventional devices.

At the SPS exhibition, Contrinex introduced the Ultra Weld Miniature Flat Pack as the latest addition to its enhanced weld-immune inductive sensor range. Measuring just 17 x 8 x 4.7 mm, the new device is aimed squarely at automated welding cells where engineers are constantly trading off sensor placement against thermal, mechanical, and spatter hazards.

Despite its low profile, the sensor is built around an impact-resistant stainless-steel housing designed to withstand close proximity to welding lines and the dynamic movement of robotic arms. The compact envelope lends itself to tight mounting positions, while maintaining enough mechanical robustness to avoid the usual false economies of ultra-small form factors in heavy-duty environments.

To address one of the most common failure modes in welding applications — slag build-up and thermal cycling — the Miniature Flat Pack uses the company’s ActivStone anti-spatter coating. The proprietary surface treatment is engineered to resist weld slag adhesion and heat stress, helping maintain detection performance where standard inductive sensors often drift or fail outright as deposits accumulate on sensing faces and housings.

Connectivity has been designed with flexibility in mind. Users can specify high-flex cabling or pigtail variants, both featuring bright LED status indication for quick visual diagnostics in crowded cells. For installations exposed to especially aggressive spatter and radiant heat, Contrinex offers optional PTFE protective tubing, allowing the cabling assembly to withstand operating temperatures up to 260 °C, compared with 200 °C for the standard robust-environment cable.

The device is positioned as a fit-and-forget option for integrators looking to reduce sensor-related downtime in welding bays where access for maintenance is limited and stoppages are expensive. By combining a small footprint with weld-immune construction, Contrinex is clearly targeting OEMs and end users who have been forced into awkward compromises between survivability and placement accuracy.

The launch also marginally raises the bar for what constitutes “weld-immune” in practical terms. With mechanical impact resistance, anti-spatter coating, extended temperature resilience, and simple visual status indication wrapped into a single miniature package, the Ultra Weld Miniature Flat Pack is unlikely to remain the smallest or toughest in class for long — but it sets a new reference point that others will now be judged against.
