Thomson offers improved synchronisation control for actuators

Thomson Industries unveils enhanced actuator synchronisation for efficiency. This advancement enables real-time load balancing across multiple units, enhancing efficiency and safety in demanding applications.

Thomson Industries, Inc., a prominent manufacturer in the linear motion control sector, has introduced an advanced synchronisation option for its Electrak HD smart electric linear actuator. This update integrates position-based synchronisation within the actuator’s onboard electronics, catering to modern motion control applications requiring immediate load balancing across several Electrak HD units.

“We collaborated closely with industrial equipment manufacturers who demand dynamic and reliable load synchronisation, redesigning our controls to meet these requirements. By incorporating advanced position sensing and communication capabilities, we have streamlined the synchronisation of multiple actuators. This enhancement boosts efficiency, strength, and safety in heavy-duty applications,” stated Anders Karlsson, Senior Product Manager for Linear Actuators at Thomson.

The new synchronisation option supports up to eight Electrak HD actuators, connected in real-time via a CAN bus network, ensuring seamless operation. A constant heartbeat signal within each actuator maintains position awareness across all units. If a single actuator detects a heavier load, it signals others to adjust speed, maintaining synchronised positioning. In case of a fault — such as loss of communication, power, or excessive voltage or temperature — the system will shut down entirely, preventing binding or buckling and enhancing reliability and safety.

Differing from most position-based actuators requiring bulky external controls, the Electrak HD incorporates all synchronisation functions into its built-in electronics, enabling a plug-and-play system. Once installed, actuators can synchronise immediately.

Capable of handling dynamic loads up to 16 kN, the Electrak HD is a favoured choice for applications traditionally reliant on hydraulic cylinders. Its enhanced synchronisation abilities make it particularly apt for systems necessitating dynamic load balancing and precise position control — capabilities unattainable with standard hydraulic cylinders.

The synchronisation option proves advantageous for applications grappling with awkward or unbalanced loads, including work platforms maintaining level surfaces, automated material handling systems ensuring smooth product movement, packaging automation for precise item positioning, and solar panel adjustments for synchronised load management.

The enhanced synchronisation option is available immediately for orders of the Thomson Electrak HD.
