DTEK and Fluence have brought a 200MW battery energy storage facility online in Ukraine, which is connected to the power grid in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

The facility consists of six new battery storage systems, each with a varying capacity ranging from 20 to 50MW, with a collective capacity to store 400MWh of electricity – enough to power approximately 600,000 Ukrainian homes for two hours.

According to the energy company in a release, the new systems will increase the security of electricity supply and reduce the risk of outages and accidents, especially in the event of a breakdown in manoeuvrable generation.

The project was initially announced in September 2024 on the back of destruction to the country’s energy infrastructure, requiring extensive repairs.

Construction of the facility was completed over the course of six months, from March to August 2025. According to DTEK, this is significantly faster than the industry average for such complex projects, driven by the urgent need for the facilities to become operational ahead of the country’s winter season.

Total investment in the project by DTEK amounts to €125 million ($126.5 million).

Commenting in a release was Ukraine’s energy minister, Svitlana Grinchuk:

“In the context of large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, the role of energy storage systems has become just as fundamental as energy generation itself.

“The National Renewable Energy Action Plan adopted by the government for 2030 clearly outlines the need for such installations, and today we are witnessing strategic goals being brought to life.”

Said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko: “This is a historic step for the Ukrainian energy system and will shape its development for years to come. We have implemented it together with Fluence, a global leader in energy storage.

“In cooperation with our American partners, we are integrating the latest technologies to make Ukraine’s energy system more reliable and sustainable.”

Said Fluence CEO Julian Nebreda: “We are honoured to collaborate with DTEK on this landmark energy storage project.

“Even in these very challenging times, innovation and partnership can light the way toward greater energy security. Together, we are contributing to a stronger, more resilient, and decentralised energy system that will support Ukraine’s long-term stability.”
