British metering provider IMServ and Valda Energy have launched the first standalone AMR smart gas meter for small businesses.

The SciFlo smart gas meter manufactured by Danish metering specialist, Flonidan, is intended for gas only premises and other locations where traditional SMETS2 meters that connect to the national smart meter network can’t be installed.

With integrated communications, the meter can transmit remote readings without being reliant on a nearby electricity meter or WAN device – potentially unlocking over one million new smart meter installations across the country.

“We’re proud to be first to market with this pioneering solution,” commented Jo Cox, CEO of IMServ.

“Partnering with Valda Energy to deliver smarter gas metering for hard-to-reach sites reflects our commitment to solving real-world energy challenges. With remote data capture, businesses gain deeper insights into their energy use – boosting efficiency, cutting costs and accelerating sustainability goals.”

Josh Turner, Head of Metering and Billing at the small business energy specialist Valda Energy, adds that delivering new innovations like gas AMR is a key part of the partnership with IMServ.

“As the first supplier to offer gas AMR to smaller businesses, we’re leading the way in helping our customer achieve their energy goals.”

The Flonidan SciFlo is a compact static ultrasonic gas meter and the first E6 (6m3/hr) meter of its type.

Originally developed for the British smart meter market, an order of more than 600,000 SciFlo meters as well as Flonidan’s UniFlo diaphragm smart gas meters are due to be installed by the Dutch network company Enexis between 2025 to 2028.

A 100% hydrogen-ready version of the SciFlo meter is currently being developed by Flonidan.

At the end of 2024, approximately 9.2 million gas meters in Britain were non-smart, 8.8 million at residential premises and 0.4 million at smaller non-domestic sites.
