Portugal’s DSO E-REDES has reported completing the installation of 6.6 million smart meters across the country’s mainland.
The rollout began in 2016 and was completed by the end of 2024, with an investment of €330 million ($344 million).
Described by E-REDES as one of the largest logistics operations Portugal has ever witnessed, the initiative had its origin in the Évora Inovcity smart city project – the country’s first – ramping up to reach an installation rate of around 25,000 meters per week in the final stages.
With this E-REDES has completed another stage of the modernisation of its network, providing it with greater intelligence, which can be measured with a real impact on customers, according to a company statement.

The smart grid today supports 323 energy communities, around 6,500 electric vehicle charging points and 234,000 individual self-consumption and 1,350 collective self-consumption customers, with 6.4 million real bill readings without an estimate.
Commented José Ferrari Careto, chairman of the Board of Directors of E-REDES: “Without smart meters there is no energy transition – they are essential for us to advance in electric mobility, in the integration of renewable energies, for self-consumption and energy communities.”
Alongside the smart meters E-REDES has been active with modernisation of its network, most recently completing reinforcement of the MV grid in the municipality of Fafe in northern Portugal.
Works carried out together with the municipality with an investment of €760,000 ($790,000) included the replacement of the aerial network with a 2.5km long underground line, the upgrading of a 250kVA transformer station, the installation of a new 250kVA transformer station and the installation of smart grid technologies to improve the management of the network and the quality of service.
