As powerline communications (PLC) evolve to meet the growing needs of smart energy solutions, STMicroelectronics is at the forefront, enhancing connectivity through advanced PRIME (PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution) protocol solutions.

The latest features in PRIME are transforming how utilities and smart energy systems operate, and ST’s PLC solutions, particularly the ST8500, exemplify this shift by supporting the newest protocol advancements with hybrid capabilities.

Among the protocol’s latest developments is the certification for the Base Node Multi-PHY, enabling hybrid connectivity through both PLC and RF (Radio Frequency). This hybrid feature, first brought to market by ST, empowers devices to leverage the benefits of powerline and wireless connectivity.

In combination with ST’s S2-LP ultra-low power radio transceiver, the ST8500 solution offers a streamlined approach to connecting diverse energy assets efficiently, even in challenging environments.

Additionally, new security profiles within the protocol bolster secure communication, addressing evolving cybersecurity standards. PRIME’s MAC Security Profiles 1 & 2 now enhance data protection, further supporting utilities in their drive for secure, reliable data transmission.

The ST8500’s capacity for PLC multichannel functionality – aggregating channels for expanded bandwidth – reinforces the product’s adaptability in complex, high density networks. Furthermore, with backward compatibility with PRIME 1.3.6, ST ensures a smooth transition for those upgrading systems without losing support for established protocols.

ST’s commitment to reliability is further highlighted by independent certification laboratories selecting ST’s PLC solutions for testing tools. This endorsement underscores ST’s position as a trusted, forward-looking partner for companies investing in robust smart grid solutions.
