Russian gas supplier Gazprom Mezhregiongaz is partnering with mobile operator MegaFon on digital solutions for gas smart metering federally.
Under the agreement, MegaFon will offer technical solutions for data transmission at the federal level for Gazprom Mezhregiongaz, Russia’s largest supplier of natural gas.
Currently, Gazprom Mezhregiongaz is developing measures for the full-scale implementation of telemetry systems for remote monitoring and transmission of gas meter readings, as part of a project to introduce smart metering systems on a federal scale.
An integral part of the project is the remote transmission of information from devices to data processing centres through MegaFon’s network.

During talks, the parties agreed to jointly develop solutions based on IoT technologies, which will make it possible to track gas consumption with high accuracy, as well as to carry out remote monitoring of facilities.
In addition, MegaFon will develop a draft federal tariff with information security for all types of data transmission devices used by Gazprom Mezhregiongaz in its operations.
“One of our main tasks is the maximum coverage of remote control of gas supplies in the domestic market,” said Sergey Gustov, CEO of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz.
“The most important part of this area is joint work with a telecom operator capable of ensuring uninterrupted data transmission to our unified information and management system, taking into account information security requirements. The first results of cooperation show that we are moving in the right direction.”
Khachatur Pombukhchan, CEO of MegaFon, added that the service area of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz covers almost the entire territory of the country.
“We have the maximum network coverage and speed of data transfer, which is critically important for our partner in this situation and the combination of these factors creates the conditions for the successful implementation of projects to digitalise gas supply control.”
The project should see the digitalisation of gas supplies in almost all regions of the Russian Federation.
As a start, a pilot project is already under way by the two companies in the Vologda region to the north of Moscow involving more than 300 gas smart meters.
