Linux Foundation Energy (LF Energy) has announced new open source initiatives and new working groups with the goal of addressing challenges in the energy transition.

These comprise four new open source projects and three new working groups, which are set to deliver new open source solutions for the energy sector.

Of the new projects two are focused on making better use of open data to address challenges in the energy transition, while the other two will help with modelling for extreme weather events and digital substations.

covXtreme, which was contributed by Shell, is a model and software for hazard risk analysis of extreme events, estimating penalised piecewise constant covariate marginal and conditional extreme value models and allowing environmental contour estimation.

NODE (National Open Data for Electrification) Collective, contributed by a consortium of US energy players, is dedicated to sourcing, structuring and maintaining comprehensive data on the residential incentive programmes in the US.

OpenSCD, contributed by Alliander and others, is a comprehensive configuration platform for fully digital substations from communication design, configuration and commissioning through to modelling, monitoring, maintenance and replacement.

OpenSynth, contributed by the London-based, Octopus Energy-powered Centre for Net Zero, is a new global open community designed to democratise synthetic demand data generated from raw smart meter data and opening its use for analysis and modelling by researchers and others.

The three new working groups bring together communities of stakeholders to identify challenges and develop open source solutions for the energy transition.

The Digital Substation Automation Systems initiative seeks to optimise digital substations through open source technology and provides a collaboration platform for LF Energy’s four other projects working on digital substations, i.e. CoMPAS, FledgePOWER, OpenSCD and SEAPATH.

LF Energy AI is a special interest group created to drive forward AI for energy priorities, with new solutions such as synthetic data generation based on real datasets, privacy preserving techniques and more.

The Open Renewable Energy Systems is aimed to revolutionise the residential renewable energy sector by developing an open standard architecture APIs and protocols to foster innovation, accessibility and sustainability.

Hydro-Québec joins LF Energy

In other LF Energy news, Hydro-Québec has become the latest organisation to join as a member and the first North American power utility member.

Hydro-Québec has collaborated previously with LF Energy by evaluating the potential for deploying projects on its infrastructure and anticipates innovation benefits with its membership.

“Hydro-Québec needs to give itself the means to achieve its ambitions if it is to succeed with its 2035 action plan, and joining LF Energy offers opportunities to be seized,” says Sébastien Lussier, from Hydro-Québec’s research centre.

“The energy transition involves many challenges and technological hurdles. Joining the LF Energy ecosystem will help Hydro-Québec in its innovation process to better respond to the energy transition, while sharing its know-how and expertise with the energy market and helping to decarbonise it.”
