The Municipality of Parga in northwestern Greece is to deploy 7,000 smart water meters with Sigfox 0G technology.

The municipality has selected the Greek smart water management solution provider Constrat for the deployment with Sigfox Hellas, operator of the country’s Sigfox 0G network.

The technology to be deployed utilises the Honeywell Merlin 868 HB-G3 LPWAN communication module that simultaneously supports Sigfox and WMBus protocols to deliver the requisite levels and quality of service in the challenging field installation environment.

“We are thrilled to provide the Municipality of Parga with smarter and more sustainable IoT solutions,” said Kostas Stratis, CEO of Constrat.

“By partnering with Sigfox Hellas, we aim to reshape the smart water metering landscape in Greece by bringing cost-effective metering solutions that can help Greek municipalities address the challenges of water scarcity, non-revenue water and water leakages.”

Sigfox Hellas, which is supported by Sigfox 0G technology owner UnaBiz, is supporting the project with the deployment of base stations in the region of the Parga Municipality.

Expressing a commitment to supporting partners and customers to deploy massive IoT projects that require high standards of reliability and sustainability, Evangelos Argyris, CEO of Sigfox Hellas, added, “Together with local domain experts like Constrat, and UnaBiz, who have connected millions of meters worldwide on the Sigfox 0G network, we are confident to bring smart metering to scale in Greece.”

Unabiz reports having connected over 2.6 million smart metering sensors worldwide, of which more than half are for water metering.

UnaBiz anticipates that the project should lead to a scaling of smart metering, and smart water metering in particular in Greece.

UnaBiz also has reported significant upgrades to the Sigfox 0G technology with the integration of a 600bps data rate across the global 0G network coupled with the introduction of the N=1 repetition mode.

These innovations collectively enable devices to operate at a new level of efficiency, reducing energy consumption by up to 18 times compared to the previous standard of 100bps with N=3 repetition mode.
