AutoGreenCharge has been introduced by Energy Web as a decentralised application for auto and charging companies and electric vehicle (EV) drivers to decarbonise e-mobility.

The intent of AutoGreenCharge is to calculate the sustainability of charging sessions and match the non-renewable portion with verified energy attribute certificates.

In 2023, electric vehicles used approximately 110TWh of electricity – comparable to the annual electricity consumption of the Netherlands – and this figure is expected to increase tenfold by 2030.

However, much of this is not renewable and for example, in the US approximately 38% of charging is estimated to be green while in Europe the figure is 60%.

AutoGreenCharge is thus designed to close this gap utilising what has become a standard for governments and businesses to decarbonise their operations.

Jesse Morris, CEO of Energy Web Foundation, highlights EV charging as a fast growing sector of electricity demand.

“Pairing demand with high impact renewables from around the globe is a great way to bring more capital into renewable energy markets.”

AutoGreenCharge’s functionality extends to a mobile app, allowing drivers to clean up their charging, and can be integrated into existing apps used by EV manufacturers and charging companies.

Over time, users should be able to choose certificates from a variety of power plants with different characteristics, such as solar power plants situated in particularly dirty grids that have a greater impact on decarbonisation than renewable energy facilities in renewable-rich areas.

Currently, Energy Web is partnering with EV manufacturers and additional partners to test, develop, and release AutoGreenCharge to the public.

Sahas Katta, CEO at Greencharge partner Smartcar, a leading connected car API platform, said the partnership will “empower EV drivers with the knowledge and confidence to maximise the sustainability of their EV charging experience.

“With Smartcar, Energy Web can seamlessly integrate across diverse vehicle brands, giving more EV drivers access to accurate insights into charging transparency and renewable energy options.”
