A major investment in end-of-life care is opening significant opportunities for the construction and built environment sector. The government has released £75M to fund upgrades across more than 170 hospices in England, marking the largest capital investment ever made in this space.

Administered by Hospice UK, this funding will be used for critical building works, facility modernisation, and energy efficiency measures—creating real prospects for contractors, construction firms, suppliers, and technology providers aligned with healthcare infrastructure.

Key construction and upgrade opportunities include:

  • Roof repairs and structural refurbishments

  • Installation of solar panels and sustainable heating systems

  • New communal lounges and family rooms

  • Digital infrastructure upgrades, including nurse stations and care-tech integrations

  • Outdoor spaces and improved accessibility

  • Adaptations for specialist medical equipment and beds

One example is Wigan and Leigh Hospice, which used its initial £25M share to replace a leaking flat roof and now plans to upgrade its heating system—demonstrating how construction plays a direct role in improving patient comfort and dignity.

This funding forms part of the government’s wider £100M capital commitment to hospices under the 10-Year Health Plan, aimed at shifting more care from hospitals into community settings. It reinforces a growing pipeline of healthcare construction projects across the UK, particularly in specialist and palliative care.

Why it matters for the construction sector:

  • Large-scale investment in healthcare estate modernisation

  • Accelerated timelines: Funds are allocated for FY 2025–26, with projects to begin immediately

  • Direct impact on patient outcomes and sustainability goals

  • Opportunities to partner with trusts and Hospice UK on delivery and compliance

With the funding already being allocated and hospice partners now able to proceed with works, construction and property partners should be prepared to engage quickly. Firms with experience in healthcare environments, retrofit, digital infrastructure, and sustainable design are particularly well-positioned to support delivery.

For industry professionals, this represents a clear alignment between social impact and commercial opportunity—helping deliver dignified, future-ready spaces where they are needed most.
