MAN Energy Solutions to provide hybrid propulsion for CLdN ro-ro vessels

A contract has been awarded to MAN Energy Solutions for the supply of four dual-fuel MAN B&W 6S60ME-GI (gas injection) engines for two new-build hybrid ro-ro vessels currently under construction for CLdN.

Each ro-ro vessel will have a hybrid-propulsion system which features two ME-GI engines (2 × 11MW) along with a MAN Energy Solutions’ EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) emissions system. Two 6MW electric propulsion motors will also be fitted to each ship, enabling a service speed of 16-17kts when operating in a fully electric mode. Each of the ship’s electric propulsion systems will be accompanied by two 678kWh batteries.

Furthermore, each ro-ro will be provided with a shore connection to enable zero emissions when in port and each MAN engine will be equipped with a power take off, with each of the vessels’ respective shafts equipped with a clutch ready to deliver a PTH of 6MW.

The diesel principle of the ME-GI engine provides high operational stability and efficiency, but also ensures 100% reliable operation during load changes on gas with just normal additions of pilot-oil amounts, states MAN Energy Solutions. The ME-GI engine is said to be capable of a seamless changeover between gas operation and diesel operation.

Compared to the largest vessels currently in service with CLdN, the new-build vessels will further reduce carbon intensity by 40% while being NOx Tier III-compliant.

Picking ME-GI engines for these vessels was a natural choice as they have become the industry standard for LNG-fueled, low-speed prime movers due to their low methane-slip and high fuel efficiency.”

The 234m-long vessels will have a lane capacity of 8,000m and are both scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2025.
