EDP Renewables and AWS partner on renewables and digital services

Spanish utility EDP Renewables will be working together with Amazon Web Services in renewable energy project development and digital services.

The two have signed a deal to collaborate on the development of wind and solar energy projects which EDP Renewables will use to provide Amazon Web Services with clean energy.

The renewable energy projects will come into operation between 2023 and 2025 and help Amazon Web Services to decarbonise its operations in Europe, the US, and Latin America.

This agreement will potentially add to a total of 475MW of PPAs already contracted between the parties. 

In addition, Amazon Web Services will become the cloud technology provider for EDF Renewables under efforts to help the utility accelerate its digital transformation. By adopting new and existing innovative technologies, EDF Renewables is hoping to enhance its operations as well as introduce new digital services for improved customer services.

EDP Renewables plans to leverage the collaboration to fulfill its 2021-25 growth plan. The agreement comes at a time both renewable power purchase agreements and digital technologies have become central to utility operations for the achievement of carbon emissions and digital transformation goals.

Miguel Alava, Managing Director, AWS Iberia, states: “Our collaboration with EDPR will help toward our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 and power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2030, a target we are on a path to meet 5 years early by 2025.”
