BYD plans European electric truck production

BYD plans European production for its new heavy-duty electric trucks. The Chinese manufacturer has introduced its 44-tonne ETT 44 in Hannover while preparing a broader local manufacturing and service presence.


BYD plans to manufacture heavy-duty trucks in Europe as it expands from imported electric commercial vehicles towards a regional production, charging, finance, and service operation for fleet customers.

The Chinese manufacturer presented its ETT 44 battery-electric tractor at IAA Transportation in Hannover, while executive vice-president Stella Li set out a longer-term intention to produce in Europe the commercial vehicles the company sells in the region.

The ETT 44 is a 4×2 tractor designed for gross combination weights of up to 44 tonnes. It uses a 651kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, with BYD quoting a driving range approaching 600km under suitable operating conditions.

Actual range will depend on payload, route, road speed, weather, temperature, auxiliary demand, and driving pattern, making fleet operation a rather more useful test than any single published maximum.

Charging is designed around both CCS and the Megawatt Charging System. BYD has specified CCS charging at up to 420kW, while megawatt charging above 1.5MW is intended to reduce charging time substantially for long-distance operations.

Those power levels move the engineering problem beyond the truck itself. A depot charging several heavy vehicles may require major grid connections, substations, switchgear, cabling, protection systems, energy management, and changes to site operations. The vehicles also have to arrive at chargers in a sequence that avoids replacing diesel refuelling with an electrical queue.

BYD is consequently assembling a broader proposition around the product. Its European plans include vehicle financing, charging infrastructure, energy storage, energy management, workshop support, and roadside assistance.

Service provision is particularly important in heavy road transport because vehicle availability directly affects revenue. A tractor that cannot be repaired quickly may strand a trailer, driver, load, and delivery commitment at the same time, placing more emphasis on parts availability and workshop coverage than a passenger-car launch normally requires.

The ETT 44 enters a market where established European truck manufacturers are already scaling battery-electric products. Daimler Truck, MAN, Scania, and Volvo have commercial programmes under way, while a growing number of Chinese manufacturers are using European trade shows and fleet trials to establish a presence.

Vehicle specification is only one part of that competition. Fleet operators will judge unfamiliar brands on residual values, maintenance response, charging support, finance, parts availability, driver acceptance, payload effect, and whole-life operating cost.

European manufacturing would alter the competitive position more substantially. BYD already has commercial vehicle operations in Hungary and is developing passenger-car production in Szeged. The company has also been assessing additional European passenger-vehicle manufacturing capacity as it builds a more localised industrial base.

Heavy trucks require a different production system from passenger cars. Chassis structures, braking, axle loading, suspension, high-capacity thermal systems, commercial-vehicle electronics, body interfaces, and fleet-specific configurations create different engineering and manufacturing requirements even where batteries, motors, power electronics, or software can be shared.

A local truck operation would therefore require its own supplier and service network rather than simply borrowing an automotive factory designed for passenger vehicles.

It could also alter the sourcing balance. Seats, glazing, tyres, braking equipment, suspension, castings, wiring, thermal systems, body equipment, charging hardware, and other components become candidates for regional procurement as production volumes increase.

BYD’s vertical integration gives the company internal capability across batteries, vehicles, power electronics, and energy systems. European localisation will nevertheless create pressure to combine those proprietary technologies with regional content, local engineering, regulatory compliance, and support infrastructure.

Tariffs provide another incentive for localisation. European vehicle manufacturers have been pressing policymakers over competition from subsidised Chinese electric vehicles, while existing measures already affect Chinese-built passenger EVs. Manufacturing a greater proportion of vehicle value inside Europe reduces some of the exposure to future trade measures, depending on the rules ultimately applied.

The ETT 44’s large battery and megawatt charging capability target the difficult territory between regional electric distribution and longer-distance freight, where payload, charging time, and infrastructure availability become progressively more restrictive.

Performance claims will therefore be tested quickly once fleet customers begin accumulating mileage. Winter efficiency, battery degradation, charging reliability, tyre wear, maintenance response, payload loss, and energy cost will matter more to operators than exhibition specifications.

BYD’s manufacturing plan extends the competitive contest beyond the vehicle itself. Established European manufacturers could increasingly face BYD through factories, suppliers, charging installations, service workshops, and fleet contracts located inside the same market rather than through imported trucks arriving at its edge.
