Airbus opens integrated Toulouse A320 delivery centre

Airbus has opened a new integrated Toulouse A320 delivery centre. The 35,000 square metre complex adds 16 aircraft positions and a dedicated technical finishing hall.


Airbus has opened an integrated A320 Family delivery centre at its Jean-Luc Lagardère site in Toulouse, adding 16 aircraft positions and a dedicated technical finishing hall as the manufacturer prepares for higher single-aisle production rates.

The new complex covers more than 35,000 square metres and brings final production work, technical adjustments and customer delivery closer together around the A320 final assembly operation. It also includes dedicated customer areas and a customs-clearance zone for international handovers.

More than 700 people and 50 partner companies were involved in constructing the facility. Airbus has routed building utilities above ground on a dedicated bridge to avoid interfering with natural groundwater beneath the site, adding an infrastructure constraint to a project whose main purpose is improving industrial flow.

The delivery centre is not another final assembly line. Its purpose is to stop increased assembly output creating congestion at the point where completed aircraft have to be technically finished, inspected, accepted and transferred to airline customers.

That distinction becomes increasingly important as production rates rise. An aircraft leaving final assembly still has to move through ground and flight testing, rectification, customer-specific finishing, documentation, regulatory processes and final acceptance before Airbus can formally deliver it.

Any imbalance between those stages can create expensive inventory. A largely complete aircraft waiting for technical work or customer handover contains most of its manufacturing value but has not yet reached the commercial event associated with delivery.

The Toulouse investment is therefore part of the same production system as the assembly lines even though it sits at the opposite end of the flow. Bringing adjustment work and customer activity into a more concentrated footprint should reduce movement between dispersed areas and give production teams clearer visibility over the status of each aircraft.

The facility follows the June inauguration of Airbus’s second modernised A320 Family final assembly line inside the Jean-Luc Lagardère building. That line joined the first modernised line opened in 2023, transforming a site originally constructed around A380 production into a high-volume single-aisle manufacturing operation.

Toulouse is one part of a global A320 industrial system that also includes final assembly in Hamburg, Mobile and Tianjin. Airbus has been adding or modernising capacity across several of those sites while trying to raise group-wide output towards between 70 and 75 A320 Family aircraft per month by the end of 2027.

The company expects to stabilise at rate 75 thereafter. At the end of August, the A320 Family backlog stood at 7,577 aircraft, including 5,691 A321neo jets, leaving Airbus with several years of demand even at substantially higher production rates.

The backlog also changes the optimisation problem. Airbus does not need to create demand for the line in the near term; it needs to convert orders into delivered aircraft efficiently despite constraints in engines, aerostructures, cabin equipment and other parts of its global supply chain.

Those upstream constraints have repeatedly affected production scheduling. Adding more final assembly or delivery capacity cannot fix a missing engine or incomplete cabin, but it can reduce the chance that aircraft which are materially complete become trapped by another internal bottleneck further downstream.

The 16 positions give Airbus more space to sequence aircraft through final technical work close to assembly. A dedicated finishing hall should also reduce competition for production space between work that belongs inside the assembly process and adjustments better handled after the aircraft has moved out of the line.

That separation matters at higher rates. A final assembly line is most productive when each station performs a predictable package of work and the aircraft moves on schedule. Bringing an aircraft back into the production sequence for late adjustments disrupts that rhythm and can consume capacity intended for the next unit.

Customer acceptance introduces another source of variability because airlines have different delivery schedules, technical teams and documentation requirements. International aircraft also require customs processes before handover. Locating those functions together does not make them identical, but it gives Airbus a single delivery operation around which the variations can be managed.

The predominance of the A321neo in the backlog adds further pressure. Longer-range and customer-specific variants can carry more complex cabin and configuration requirements, increasing the importance of keeping technical finishing separate from the paced final assembly environment.

Airbus has designed its newer A320 production infrastructure around greater use of digital tools, automated logistics and robotics. Delivery remains less amenable to simple repetition because each aircraft is at the intersection of manufacturing, customer requirements and regulatory paperwork, but the flow can still be industrialised through better physical layout and status information.

The former A380 site gives Airbus room to do that at scale. Reusing the Jean-Luc Lagardère infrastructure also avoids abandoning a large aerospace manufacturing asset after the end of A380 production and demonstrates how the Toulouse footprint has been reconfigured around the aircraft family that now dominates commercial demand.

The new delivery centre will not determine whether Airbus reaches 70–75 A320 Family aircraft a month on its own. That target remains dependent on suppliers and the performance of the entire production network. It does, however, remove one obvious constraint at the final stage: completed aircraft now have more dedicated space to move through finishing and customer acceptance without competing directly with assembly activity.
