Tampa LoRaWAN being expanded for AMI and IoT solutions at scale

Tampa’s public LoRaWAN network is being expanded across the Bay metropolitan area by software and service provider Senet.

The deployment in Tampa, Florida, believed to be the largest metropolitan LoRaWAN connectivity rollout in North America, will cover over 4,100km2 across Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, including the cities of Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg.

With over 80 planned tower sites, it should provide capacity to support upwards of 16 million IoT device connections.

Due to gateway density and signal strength, the network will provide both broad outdoor coverage and indoor penetration, opening up connectivity for a wider range of utility and other use cases.

The current LoRaWAN has customers using it for smart water metering in the region. The wider network should enable further expansion of their footprint and the potential for enhanced utility service offerings through infrastructure monitoring and safety applications such as leak detection, valve control and asset tracking, while municipalities and businesses will be enabled to introduce low-cost sensor-based use cases to drive new services to customers.

“As IoT technologies are increasingly influencing how we design, develop, build, and operate the world’s physical infrastructure, our vision is to design networks that create a focal point of innovation for high-growth regions like Tampa Bay Metro area,” said Bruce Chatterley, CEO of Senet.

“The combination of customer readiness, economic growth and a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem make this a great location to advance our infrastructure investments to help drive and support ongoing municipal and business efficiencies, resource conservation and overall economic vitality.”

The Tampa Bay area LoRaWAN network is being expanded on a rolling construction schedule and will be complete by the end of 2021.

Senet’s public carrier-grade LoRaWAN network is deployed in over 29 US states, covering over 1,300 cities and serving a population of over 55 million people.
