Gulbrandsen has begun commercial supply of HYPORE, a range of silica supports and silica-supported chromium catalyst precursors for polyethylene production. Announced on 13 October, the products follow an internal research and pilot manufacturing programme and are now being made at a new greenfield facility. Selected grades are commercially available, while tailored formulations remain in customer qualification.
The launch extends Gulbrandsen’s established involvement in polyolefin catalyst ingredients beyond its metal alkyl products. Silica supports provide a solid carrier for catalyst constituents, while the chromium-containing precursors incorporate a catalytic metal component. They are related materials but do not perform identical functions, and a supported precursor may require further preparation before use in a particular polymerisation process.
HYPORE is intended for gas-phase and slurry-phase polyethylene production. In gas-phase manufacture, polymer particles typically develop in a reactor supplied with gaseous reactants, while slurry operations keep reacting particles suspended in a liquid medium. The physical characteristics of the catalyst support influence how the material is handled and how polymer particles develop during the reaction, alongside the chemistry of the catalyst itself.
Gulbrandsen offers granular and spherical silica products with selectable particle-size distributions. Its published HYPORE information identifies pore architecture, surface properties, particle morphology and metal loading as characteristics that can be adjusted. Pores and surface area influence access to catalytic components, while particle shape and size affect the physical handling of material within the selected process. No single specification can be assumed suitable for every catalyst and reactor.
The new manufacturing operation is supported by process development, analytical testing and quality-control capabilities. Gulbrandsen says these are intended to keep key material properties consistent between batches, although it has not published comparative production-yield data. Customer qualification remains necessary where a polymer producer or catalyst manufacturer requires a specific formulation.
Packaging can also be tailored to customers’ material handling and distribution requirements. The supplier’s product information identifies customised packaging alongside its control of silica properties, allowing grades to be supplied in configurations appropriate to a customer’s receiving and storage arrangements.
Commercial availability currently covers selected HYPORE grades, with further customised products still being qualified. Gulbrandsen has not disclosed the location or annual output capacity of its new facility, nor quantified improvements in customers’ reactor performance from the materials.
