KUKA launches autonomous counterbalance forklift family

KUKA has launched its first autonomous counterbalance forklift family worldwide. The 1.5-tonne KMF 1500P-CB combines three-metre lifting, LFP batteries, VDA 5050 connectivity, and automated handling of open and closed pallets.


KUKA has launched the KMF 1500P-CB, the first model in a new autonomous forklift family designed to extend mobile robotics from horizontal transport into pallet collection, lifting, and transfer operations.

The counterbalance vehicle can move open and closed pallets and containers weighing up to 1,500kg and lift loads to heights of three metres. KUKA is positioning the machine for manufacturing and warehouse environments where conventional automated mobile robots cannot handle the full range of pallet-transfer tasks already carried out by manually driven forklifts.

The counterbalance configuration is central to that flexibility. Unlike some pallet-moving vehicles that use support legs extending underneath or alongside a load, the KMF 1500P-CB can approach enclosed transfer points such as roller conveyors and retrieve loads without requiring every handover station to be redesigned around the vehicle.

That is a practical issue in brownfield automation. Existing factories and distribution centres frequently contain conveyors, racks, machines, safety barriers, loading stations, and pedestrian routes that were installed long before autonomous vehicles were considered. A system that requires wholesale changes to those interfaces can make the integration project more expensive than the vehicle itself.

KUKA has equipped the forklift with larger wheels for longer transport routes through production and warehouse areas. Power comes from lithium iron phosphate batteries using conductive charging, while the company is promoting the system for automated operation around the clock.

Continuous operation depends on more than battery capacity. Charging has to be coordinated with fleet utilisation, production schedules, peak transport demand, vehicle routing, and maintenance. An automated fleet can lose much of its theoretical productivity if too many vehicles leave critical routes for charging at the same time.

The KMF 1500P-CB therefore sits inside KUKA’s wider autonomous mobile robot software environment. It supports the VDA 5050 interface, allowing compatible third-party fleet-management systems to communicate with the vehicle rather than forcing every installation into an isolated single-manufacturer fleet.

That interoperability is becoming more important as manufacturers deploy different mobile robots for different jobs. A low-profile AMR carrying components beneath a rack has different mechanical requirements from a forklift lifting a 1.5-tonne pallet, but a central traffic-management layer still has to prevent both vehicles being dispatched into the same space at the same time.

VDA 5050 provides a standard interface for exchanging transport orders and vehicle status between fleet-control systems and compatible automated vehicles. It does not make different machines mechanically interchangeable, but it reduces one of the software barriers to operating mixed fleets from several suppliers.

KUKA has also placed safety and regulation prominently in the launch. The company says the forklift uses a 360-degree safety concept designed for dynamic production and warehouse environments and already meets the requirements of the European Machinery Regulation that becomes mandatory in January 2027.

Site-level risk assessment remains necessary regardless of the vehicle’s compliance. Fork routes can include blind corners, pedestrian crossings, damaged floors, temporary obstructions, manually driven trucks, unstable loads, and transfer points whose real operating conditions differ considerably from the neat version shown on a layout drawing.

Automation tends to expose those inconsistencies. An experienced forklift driver can recognise a pallet that has been left slightly out of position or a temporary obstruction and improvise around it; an autonomous system needs the problem detected, classified, and handled through a defined control process.

The launch also reflects the wider shift towards automating conventional materials-handling work rather than limiting mobile robotics to specialist transport cells. ABB has also expanded its autonomous forklift range, illustrating how large automation suppliers increasingly see pallet transport, storage, and line feeding as a standard industrial robotics market.

KUKA’s vehicle is available to order globally from September, with first deliveries expected from December 2026. A second model, the KMF 1500P-PS pallet stacker, is due to join the range during the first quarter of 2027.

The pallet stacker is intended for open pallets and containers and uses a more compact architecture for confined spaces. The two designs address different physical constraints: counterbalance vehicles provide flexible access to loads and enclosed transfer points, while stackers can reduce the floor space required for manoeuvring.

For manufacturers, the return on autonomous forklift investment will depend on more than labour replacement. Potential gains include more predictable material flow, fewer repetitive driving tasks, reduced exposure to vehicle collisions, and the ability to move loads outside conventional shift structures.

Against that sit integration costs, fleet software, charging infrastructure, safety validation, maintenance, route discipline, and the continuing requirement to manage pallets and transfer points consistently. Automating an untidy logistics process generally produces an automated untidy logistics process rather than a good one.

The KMF 1500P-CB moves KUKA further into the part of intralogistics traditionally dominated by conventional forklift trucks. Its commercial significance will depend on whether customers can integrate that capability into existing factories without first rebuilding the factories around the robot.
