SCHOTT has consolidated its Landshut electronic packaging operations into one. The double-digit-million-euro investment combines development, production, and administration for around 550 employees serving semiconductor, medical, aerospace, and emerging technology markets.


SCHOTT has consolidated its two Landshut operations into a single electronic packaging competence centre following a double-digit-million-euro investment in a new production and administration facility.

The ONE SCHOTT Factory in Landshut West brings development, manufacturing, and administrative teams back under one roof after 25 years of operating across separate locations. Around 550 employees work at the site, which is the headquarters of SCHOTT’s Electronic Packaging business unit.

The company develops and manufactures more than 1,000 different glass and metal components at Landshut for applications including semiconductors, medical technology, and aerospace. SCHOTT is also developing products for emerging areas including battery technology and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The investment is intended to reduce the distance between product development and industrial production. Bringing engineering and manufacturing teams into the same site allows tooling, materials, process parameters, quality requirements, and production layouts to be addressed earlier as new components move from development into serial manufacture.

That matters particularly in electronic packaging, where the protective component around a sensor, semiconductor, optical device, or electrical connection can be as critical to long-term reliability as the electronics themselves. SCHOTT specialises in hermetic packaging and glass-to-metal sealing, where metal housings or conductors are bonded with glass to create electrically insulating, gas-tight connections.

Such seals are used where electronics have to remain protected from moisture, gases, pressure changes, temperature cycling, sterilisation, vibration, or other demanding operating conditions. Applications range from sensors and medical devices to avionics, power electronics, semiconductor packages, and industrial equipment.

The manufacturing challenge is not simply forming glass around metal. Different glasses and metals expand at different rates as temperature changes, so material selection and process control have to account for thermal expansion, operating temperature, electrical requirements, pressure, and the mechanical properties of the finished assembly.

Moving those designs into volume production also requires tight control of dimensions, glass composition, surface condition, furnace cycles, inspection, and leak performance. A component that works as a laboratory prototype still has to be manufactured consistently enough for customers to qualify it within a larger system.

The Landshut consolidation is therefore more than an office move. SCHOTT says flexible production structures and closer integration between functions are intended to shorten the route from development to industrial manufacture, particularly as customers demand smaller packages, higher connection densities, and materials capable of surviving more severe environments.

Battery applications are one example. Electrical feedthroughs and connectors in battery systems need to maintain insulation and sealing while coping with temperature variation, chemical exposure, pressure, and increasingly compact packaging. Semiconductor and communications applications place different demands on signal integrity, miniaturisation, heat management, and long-term hermeticity.

The building itself has also been designed to reduce operational energy demand. SCHOTT puts primary energy demand at 54.3kWh per square metre annually, while the envelope meets the KfW 55 standard. Heating and cooling are provided through heat pumps, supported by heat recovery and a 308kWp photovoltaic installation.

Based on the company’s internal calculations, carbon dioxide emissions associated with the new building’s energy requirements should be around 460 tonnes a year lower than those associated with the previous facility. The figure relates specifically to building energy rather than the total environmental footprint of the products manufactured at Landshut.

The consolidated factory reinforces a presence in the city extending back more than 80 years. Landshut remains one of SCHOTT’s main competence centres for glass-to-metal bonding and specialty glass powders, while its Electronic Packaging operation is supported by other manufacturing sites and technical centres internationally.

That network means Landshut is competing for future programmes as well as serving established products. Investment decisions within multinational manufacturers increasingly follow the sites that can combine engineering expertise, automation, available capacity, energy performance, and the ability to move new products into reliable production quickly.

Electronic packaging rarely receives the attention given to the chips, sensors, batteries, or medical systems it protects, but a sophisticated electronic device remains fairly useless once moisture or gas reaches circuitry that was expected to survive for years. Reliable packaging is consequently an enabling manufacturing technology rather than an afterthought.

With the ONE SCHOTT Factory now open, the project moves from construction into utilisation. The industrial test will be whether the consolidated operation shortens development cycles, improves production efficiency, and gives Landshut sufficient flexibility to absorb the next generation of electronic packaging work.
