MBDA has opened a missile repair and logistics centre at Czosnów in Poland, adding local maintenance, support, and training capacity to air-defence programmes that already connect Polish procurement with engineering and manufacturing work in Britain. UK personnel will work alongside Polish counterparts at the site as the country’s missile-support infrastructure expands.
The new centre is intended to support Poland’s PILICA+ programme, providing faster and more direct maintenance, logistics, and training for equipment used in the country’s integrated air-defence network. The UK Ministry of Defence says more than 400 MBDA employees in Britain are working on programmes supporting Poland, with activity linked to jobs in Bristol, Stevenage, and Bolton.
That makes Czosnów more than a regional depot. Sustainment is a substantial part of any complex missile programme because equipment availability depends on inspection, repair, spare parts, technical data, training, and configuration management long after the original launcher or missile has been delivered. Moving more of those functions into Poland should shorten the support chain for work the facility is qualified to carry out.
The centre sits alongside the much larger NAREW programme, under which Britain and Poland are cooperating on a broader air-defence capability. The programme is worth more than £4 billion and is expected to deliver over 1,000 air-defence missiles and more than 100 launchers, while helping Poland build sovereign missile-manufacturing capability.
The distinction between production and support matters. The newly opened Czosnów site is a repair, logistics, and training facility rather than the missile factory itself, but the two parts of the industrial system are closely related. A sovereign defence capability has limited value if equipment still has to leave the country for routine maintenance, specialist support, or technical training.
For MBDA’s British operations, the Polish programmes provide long-duration engineering and production work rather than a single export shipment. Missile systems require software and configuration control, component management, qualification, training, spares, repair procedures, and periodic engineering changes throughout their operating lives. Those activities can continue for years after the headline procurement contract is signed.
Poland has been increasing the amount of defence work carried out domestically as procurement spending rises and European governments place greater emphasis on supply security. Localisation can reduce exposure to transport, customs, security, and scheduling constraints, particularly when equipment would otherwise have to cross borders for specialist attention.
It also creates a more demanding requirement for technical governance. A distributed support network has to use common maintenance instructions, approved parts, calibrated equipment, software baselines, and controlled engineering data. Faster local turnaround is useful only if configuration discipline remains consistent with the wider programme.
Training is part of that system. Modern air defence combines missiles, launchers, sensors, command-and-control equipment, communications, software, and support assets, so serviceability depends on technicians and operators understanding both individual components and the interfaces between them. A local training function allows that knowledge to remain closer to the units operating the equipment.
The centre also gives Poland a local base from which lessons from service activity can feed back into training and support planning. Recurring faults, component wear, software issues, and repair turnaround can be identified closer to the user, giving programme engineers better evidence for spares holdings and maintenance intervals. That feedback loop becomes more valuable as the installed fleet grows and deliveries under NAREW increase.
The industrial relationship between Britain and Poland extends beyond missile systems. The MIECZNIK programme is co-developing three frigates based on the Arrowhead design related to the Royal Navy’s Type 31, while the two countries signed a Security and Defence Partnership Treaty in May covering broader cooperation in defence, security, and economic resilience.
For manufacturers, political agreements matter most when they turn into repeatable engineering and production work. Czosnów is a physical addition to that structure: people, maintenance capability, logistics, and training positioned nearer the equipment they are intended to sustain.
For the British sites supporting Poland, the consequence is a more distributed industrial model rather than the displacement of all work into the customer country. Local support can coexist with UK engineering, production, and programme management where those activities remain tied to MBDA’s wider missile architecture.
The next challenge is integration. MBDA has to connect local support activity with the larger PILICA+ and NAREW programmes without creating parallel processes, duplicated stock, or inconsistent configuration control. Poland wants greater sovereign capability, while MBDA needs common engineering standards across an increasingly distributed network. Czosnów gives that network another operating node; its value will be measured in equipment availability and the amount of technical capability retained locally.
