Alfa Laval UK launches a proactive dry-dock strategy to reduce ship maintenance delays. The initiative combines early condition audits with tailored spare parts packages to improve uptime, streamline logistics, and extend equipment life for global fleets.


Alfa Laval UK has expanded its marine service offering with a dry-dock support strategy designed to reduce vessel downtime through proactive audits and bespoke spare parts solutions. The move reinforces the company’s position as a leading provider of marine technology and lifecycle support for shipowners and operators.

The enhanced service focuses on pre-docking condition audits conducted up to six months before a vessel enters dry dock. According to Ezgi Sezen, UK Marine Services Manager, this early intervention is essential for modern fleets: “By auditing systems months before docking, we can spot issues early, plan ahead, and prevent costly surprises,” she said. “As ships become more complex and budgets tighten, this level of foresight is essential in keeping vessels’ uptime at a maximum.”

Each audit delivers a detailed equipment overview — from corrosion checks to upgrade recommendations — allowing Alfa Laval’s teams to plan tailored maintenance and parts provision roughly four months before the docking period. This approach enables coordinated logistics and pre-approved spares availability, significantly reducing the idle time typically associated with repair scheduling.

The service includes a structured spare parts programme, with three kit levels to match vessel requirements: Basic for safety-critical essentials, Standard for comprehensive overhauls, and Plus for operators requiring extensive onboard stock to minimise turnaround time. These kits are based on either prefilled customer questionnaires or site assessments, ensuring each vessel’s maintenance profile is accurately reflected.

“With the right parts and expertise in place and ready the moment a ship docks, that planning can turn time saved into operational revenue advantage for shipowners,” Sezen added. “Rather than becoming another cost-driven necessity, dry-docking becomes a strategic opportunity to enhance performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and extend equipment life.”

The strengthened UK offer forms part of Alfa Laval’s £25 million marine operation, supported by 165 staff including 12 marine specialists, and anchored by its Camberley Service Centre — the national hub for rapid response and component overhauls. Globally, the company has expanded its dry-dock network, positioning service centres near major shipyards to ensure consistent support and transparent pricing across regions.

Alfa Laval’s retrofit and control system upgrade capabilities can also be deployed both in-dock and at sea, allowing operators to coordinate maintenance across propulsion, separation, and thermal systems while keeping budgets under tighter control.

“Dry docking can be a very stressful component of fleet management,” said Tristan Matthews, Head of UK Marine Division. “We’re simplifying the process. With a clear service package and aligned activities, we’re helping shipowners turn every dry-dock into a performance upgrade, backed by 24/7 technical support through our global network.”
