Adrian Guggisberg, President of ABB’s Electrification Distribution Solutions division, and Marco Tellarini, Senior Vice-President, EMEA for ABB’s Electrification Service division, talk about accelerating the energy transition by enabling decarbonisation, innovating for a more resilient power grid and driving smarter energy use.

The three main challenges utilities must overcome include securing the necessary human resources, ensuring a reliable supply chain for equipment, and digitising the power grid to make it smarter and more efficient.

Highlighted in this interview is the need for a fundamental industry change to adapt to these challenges, moving from a simple grid to a smart, digitised one.

Modernisation of electricity distribution grids

Tellarini notes that the modernisation of medium and low voltage switchgear, advocating for the replacement of active components rather than entire systems to reduce production downtime, and enhance functionality with digital upgrades, will significantly reduce CO2 emissions by five times per replaced breaker.

This transition equates to the absorption of CO2 by 73 trees over ten years, offering substantial economic and environmental benefits.

This interview was filmed in October 2024 at Enlit Europe in Milan, Italy.
