The Maltese Water Services Corporation has extended its smart metering collaboration with Suez for five years to 2029.

The contract covers the management of the smart metering service for water consumption in the archipelago.

It also includes the implementation of Suez’s ON’connect remote reading solution incorporating the Wize LPWAN technology that gives customers access to their water consumption and alerts to abnormal consumption, potentially indicative of leakage.

“This renewed collaboration with Suez is a testament to the value that smart metering brings to our operations and customers,” said Karl Cilia, CEO of the Water Services Corporation.

“We have seen significant improvements in efficiency and service delivery, allowing us to proactively manage our water resources and provide better service to our customers while addressing the critical issue of water conservation in Malta.”

The Maltese archipelago has a population of about 550,000 but with more 2 million tourists the number is more than quadrupled, requiring rigorous management of the water resources.

To address this the Water Services Corporation started implementing smart water meters as early as 2009 and to date more than 310,000 meters have been deployed delivering coverage performance of around 96%.

The data is collected and processed via the ON’connect solution and besides its accessibility to customers and delivering the approximately 3,500 consumption alerts each month, is being used by the Water Services Corporation to reduce leaks and react to other anomalies and at the same time improve its operational, commercial and environmental performance by significantly reducing this non-revenue water.

Patricia Villoslada, SVP SUEZ Digital Solutions, expressed delighted with the extension of the collaboration with the Water Services Corporation.

“Since our initial pilot in 2009, our solution has consistently contributed to improving the efficiency of our customer’s network and service, helping to make Malta a model of smart water management and sustainable water preservation.”

The Water Services Corporation is in charge of the whole drinking water and wastewater cycles in the Maltese islands.
