Baleària has been awarded the tender for berth number 3 at the port of Tarifa in Spain, which will enable it to manage the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line for the next 15 years.

Electric fast ferries

Baleària plans to build two electric fast ferries, electrify the ports and install a recharging system. The two electric catamarans will be built at the Armon Shipyards in Gijón, Spain; construction will take two-and-a-half years. During this period, the shipping company will allocate two transitional fast ferries to the route: the Avemar Dos and the Jaume I.

“The Baleària teams have worked very hard in recent years to win this tender, managing to present the most technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable technical project,” said Adolfo Utor, president of Baleària. “We are the fair winners and we can be very proud of our success. We are going to throw ourselves into this new green corridor and we are going to collaborate with all our stakeholders to turn the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line into an example of mobility, modernity and international sustainability.”

Local investment

Utor pointed out that, in line with Baleària‘s commitment to the region, the shipping company “will act as a driving force for the economy, strengthening local employment and offering the opportunity to join the teams to all workers with experience on this route, opening together a new stage of hope and progress.”

He also pointed out that for the first time in decades, this route will be operated with a Spanish-flagged ship, which will favor the incorporation of national and local professionals and significantly increase the job offer for seafarers in the area.
