Innovate UK has launched the NextGen Space Challenge 2024 to find the UK’s next generation of space technology entrepreneurs.

The competition is aimed at entrepreneurs between the ages of 21-35 with an innovative idea that uses space technology to inspire socioeconomic development.

The initiative seeks to deepen international collaboration in sustainable space technology, to be delivered by Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa and supporting the UK-Africa Space Technology for Sustainability Global Innovation Network.

The competition is also open to innovators in South Africa, Kenya and Rwanda, and supported by the UK, South African, Kenyan and Rwandan Space Agencies (UKSA, SANSA, KSA and RSA), the African Space Leadership Institute (ASLI), and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The five top applications from each country will be selected as finalists and have access to a global incubation programme, as well as being invited to pitch their idea to a global industry network. The top three pitches will go on to win up to £1,000 in innovation awards.

Innovate UK’s mission is to help companies to grow through development and commercialisation of new products, processes and services. Alana Kruger, Knowledge Transfer Manager at Innovate UK Business Connect, said: “Space technology is revolutionising industries, from environmental monitoring through to water and food security. Participating in this challenge offers young innovators the chance to further their business ideas, learn from international stakeholders, and gain access to previously unattainable industry opportunities.

“This next generation of innovators will help shape the future of space technology and contribute to global sustainability efforts, and we are thrilled to be able to support them in doing that.”
