Shift Clean Energy and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) have collaborated with SeaTech Solutions International and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to develop a 50T BP electric tug, named E-Volt 50.

The E-Volt 50 aims to reduce carbon emissions, improve operational efficiency and set new benchmarks for performance and environmental sustainability in the tugboat industry.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the parties outlines their commitment to a collaboration that leverages each partner’s expertise.

SeaTech will design the vessel. Shift, a provider of energy storage solutions, will provide the energy storage for the vessel. ABS will ensure that the construction and design adhere to all applicable regulatory standards, certifying safety, reliability and compliance. GRSE will oversee the construction and delivery of the vessel.

Indian Navy Commodore P R Hari, chairman and managing director of GRSE, said, “We are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking collaboration that combines the expertise of GRSE and SeaTech, Shift and ABS. The E-Volt 50 is a bold step toward a cleaner and greener future for the maritime sector. By utilizing sustainable energy solutions and cutting-edge technology, we aim to redefine the standards of performance, efficiency and environmental stewardship.”

Lasse Agger Antonisen, senior director and head of sales at Shift, said, “As we embark on this groundbreaking collaboration alongside GRSE, SeaTech and ABS, Shift Clean Energy proudly stands at the forefront of maritime innovation with the E-Volt 50. This collaborative initiative goes beyond the creation of a tugboat; it signifies a pivotal moment of transformation in the maritime industry.
