York Minster achieves energy savings with solar upgrade

York Minster achieves significant savings with new solar installation. The historic cathedral has installed 184 solar panels, generating over 42,000kWh of clean energy in six months. This meets 80% of its energy needs at peak, saving nearly £20,000 and offsetting eight tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

York Minster has realised substantial energy and cost savings following the installation of an advanced solar system on its rooftop. The 184-panel array has generated more than 42,000kWh of clean electricity in the first six months, covering over 80% of the Minster’s energy requirements at peak, saving nearly £20,000, and offsetting eight tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

In line with the Church of England’s commitment to achieving net-zero operations by 2030, the Chapter of York sought a solution to significantly reduce carbon emissions while delivering notable cost savings. The importance of fire safety was paramount, given the Minster’s history of rooftop fires, including a catastrophic lightning-induced blaze in 1984.

Partnering with Associated Clean Technologies (ACT), the Chapter chose SolarEdge’s DC-Optimised Inverter and Power Optimizer system for its capability to maximise solar output while minimising electrical and fire risks. Alex McCallion, Director of Works and Precinct for the Chapter of York, stated, “This is an incredibly important building… however, it is also a building with an unfortunate history of fire.” The SolarEdge technology was selected primarily for peace of mind and a significant reduction in risk.

ACT designed the system to ensure performance and protection, with Power Optimizers installed beneath each panel. This allows panels to operate independently, ensuring that shading from the Minster’s complex architecture only affects individual modules, maintaining high overall energy production.

Safety remains a non-negotiable priority. SolarEdge’s technology includes SafeDC™, which reduces high-voltage DC current to touch-safe levels when necessary, significantly lowering the risk of electrical shock. The system also features Sense Connect technology in the S-Series Power Optimizers, monitoring for heat build-up to prevent electrical arcs.

For added security, a Firefighter Gateway is integrated into the building’s fire alarm system, enabling the solar array to be shut down swiftly in emergencies. Nicola Newby, Operations Director at ACT, remarked, “We are a huge advocate of the technology for many reasons, but primarily because of its safety features.”
