Uzbek state firm to deploy 4 million smart gas meters with Pietro Fiorentini
Uzbek state-owned company Hudugazta’minot has partnered with Italian smart meter firm Pietro Fiorentini and local agency Texnopark to modernise the country’s gas metering system.
Hudugazta’minot will leverage some 4 million smart gas meters from Pietro Fiorentini to improve gas usage monitoring.
The Uzbek firm is using a $220 million loan secured from Italy’s Intesa Sanpaolo and SACE to purchase the smart gas meters and related technology, the total value of which is $264 million.
The project is part of efforts by the Uzbek government to digitise its energy system for enhanced operations and to accelerate the green and energy transitions as climate mitigation mechanisms.
The government has developed a strategy that includes importing technology and expertise from Italy to accelerate the digital transformation of utility operations.
The installation of the smart gas meters is expected to reduce energy losses and improve billing for utility firms, as well as enable consumers to enhance their energy management for efficiency and savings.

Pietro Fiorentini states that smart meters have reduced the loss of “blue” fuel, the emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere, and gas combustion by 7.3 million cubic meters in the Tashkent region in 2021 alone.
In October 2021, the Italian firm announced the deployment of 2.1 million smart gas meters with another Uzbek utility Khududgaztaminot JSC.
Commenting on the $463.7 million grid modernisation initiative, Alessandro Vistoli, the CEO of Terranova, a subsidiary of Pietro Fiorentini said: “We will keep supporting the improvement of the gas network management through the supply of technologies for the real-time management of the pressure metering systems.
“Thanks to the Artificial Intelligence, our platforms will open up to future opportunities to automate the processes of the whole gas sector. By implementing all these innovative automatic systems, Uzbekistan will become a leading country in the natural gas industry.”
