Brunei and Actility deploy LoRaWAN network for smart city services

Brunei, a nation on the island of Borneo in Asia, is deploying a LoRaWAN Internet of Things (IoT) network for smart city operations with a specific focus on water management.

Various departments of the government of Brunei will leverage the network once completed, with the Ministries of Development and Public Works initiating the rollout in partnership with IoT firm Actility and local company Anian.

The project includes Anian deploying IoT communication gateways for connectivity, sensors, a SCADA, as well as data management and application dashboards across the island.

So far, some 11 communication gateways have been installed with the aim to install 200 units. The solution is hosted in Brunei government’s data center.

Anian and Actility partnered with software firm IoThink Solutions to leverage the deployed infrastructure for smart building, smart energy, smart city, smart industry, smart water management, and smart retail services.

Specific use cases will include the monitoring of water networks to address water leaks, water quality, reservoir levels to ensure demand is met, and the state of pumps.

The project is expected to help improve Brunei’s monitoring of water levels in rivers, as flooding is very frequent and often unpredictable. The project will enhance the island’s flood and storms warning system, according to the statement.

In buildings, the solution will enable monitoring of air quality and water and electricity consumption for improved efficiency and conservation.

The government will also monitor bridges and other road infrastructure with the IoT architecture.

Nicolas Guillou, Co-Founder and CEO at ANIAN said: “The technical support provided by the IoThink and Actility teams made the project a success. The advantage of Actility’s solution is its scalability.”

Nicolas Jordan, COO at Actility added that the project will improve people’s lives, protect the environment and lower costs.
