Stem bags contracts to monitor six new FTM storage sites in New York State

Distributed energy resources (DER) developer NineDot has selected artificial intelligence-based energy storage firm Stem to monitor some six new front-of-the-meter (FTM) storage systems being deployed to improve energy resilience of the New York State grid.

The energy storage systems are being built in Staten Island and have a total capacity of 110MWh.

Stem will procure the storage systems and provide its Athena smart energy platform for real-time operation of the sites.

Once the projects are connected on the grid by May 2023, NineDot will use Stem’s services to optimise the participation of the plants in New York’s Value of Distributed Energy Resources programme (VDER) which aims to leverage energy flexibility from DERs for reliability and increased penetration of renewables.

Stem’s platform will enable NineDot to optimise VDER credits, generate additional revenues, achieve incentive and warranty compliance and monitor distributed resources using a single platform.

The rollout of the energy storage systems follows the New State government announcing a plan to double its storage capacity to 6,000MW by 2030 as a move to amplify the decarbonisation of the grid to mitigate climate change and enhance grid resilience.

Energy storage will play a key role in helping New York to achieve the state’s 2040 100% clean energy goal.

NineDot is using its $100 million partnership deal with Carlyle to build and operate energy storage sites in New York.

John Carrington, CEO of Stem said: “For over a decade, Stem has successfully optimised distributed energy resources for partners and customers in multiple markets to maximise the value stack of incentives, including the VDER programme. Our expertise in front-of-the-meter standalone energy storage with our Athena AI-driven energy storage software makes it easy for developers like NineDot to deploy successful projects.”

David Arfin, the CEO of NineDot Energy added: “Partnering with Stem brings us closer to our goal of delivering reliable power and resilience for the electric grid. Stem’s unparalleled customer support, access to top-tier hardware suppliers, and best-in-class Athena® platform enable the user-friendly experience needed to manage a successful energy storage portfolio.”
