Software platform deployed to help drones with powerline inspections

A tech company operating out of the US and Finland has developed a software platform to help improve data collection and usage for drones carrying out transmission and distribution powerline inspections.

Sharper Shape, which develops powerline management solutions for the utilities industry, has signed a contract with the Volatus Aerospace group of companies to launch their Drone Service Providers (DSP) management platform.

DSP provides a digital platform (CORE) for drone service providers to coordinate, manage and deliver data collection projects in one place.

According to Sharper Shape, the service is offered to companies that use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to inspect or work on utility transmission and distribution systems. CORE is available through a web browser or as an app, allowing it to be used remotely and in real-time in the field.

Volatus Aerospace group, which operates in the drones services market providing infrastructure inspections, mapping and modelling services, is the first to strike such a deal with Sharper Shape.

Kristy McDermott, vice president of Sharper Shape sales and commercial processes, commented on the announcement in a release, touting the use of the platform to enhance data collection and sharing for UAV operators:

“Typical pain points tend to include the cumbersome planning and administrative processes associated with inspections, the inconsistency of systems and software from spreadsheets to visualisation tools. DSP CORE eliminates these…while offering a stunning user interface that translates data, giving utilities a clearer, real-time view of their asset.”

Frank Segarra, CEO of Volatus Aerospace US subsidiary ConnexiCore also commented on the significance of the deal with Sharper Shape for Volatus, which operates largely in the field of transmission and distribution line UAV inspections.

“Our collaboration with Sharper Shape…is a testament to our commitment to groundbreaking advancements. By harnessing the power of their transformative software solutions, specifically their cutting-edge DSP Management software, CORE, we are poised to revolutionise the way we analyse and present data to our valued customers.”

McDermott added: “We’re delighted to have Volatus Aerospace on the books. Volatus is highly respected provider, and CORE will allow them to elevate the already great work they do by offering their customers a solution that will save time and money, while improving operational efficiencies of their assets.”
