Royal IHC expands cutter suction dredger fleet with electric alternatives
To expand and make its portfolio of Beaver standard cutter suction dredgers (CSDs) more sustainable, Royal IHC has introduced an electric version, called the Beaver E, for each of the Beaver vessel types.
Benefitting from a fully electric propulsion system, the Beaver E brings several other advantages including limited noise and vibrations in addition to efficiency, reliability and zero emissions, enabling it to conduct work in sensitive areas. The company’s latest vessel type also complies with all of the latest environmental regulations.

The Beaver E’s diesel-powered main ponton can be swapped for an electric alternative, resulting in electrical components that require less maintenance. The vessels feature the same dredging and hydraulic installations as their fossil-fuel-powered counterparts.
Royal IHC has continued to develop its Beaver CSDs for the past 60 years to produce a highly efficient vessel. Through the launch of its new Beaver E, Royal IHC aims to support the dredging industry by reducing emissions during its operations.
“Royal IHC wants to play a leading role in designing, building and providing sustainable solutions to our customers in the maritime industry,” said Catina Geselschap, the company’s director of dredging standard modular vessels. “We have an existing track record in fully electric cutter suction dredgers and are now taking the next step by adding this electrical Beaver as a stock product to our portfolio of standard modular vessels.”
