Post mould Label-free graphics: permanent, direct printing on PE/PP

Lysis Technologies developed the method to create label-free graphics with our thermoplastic inks while printing directly on the PE or PP part. It is a very simple process, and uses tools already familiar and commonly found. These vary from plain painting to stamping. The low surface energy of the polyethylene is “tamed” without having to precondition the plastic part and without using up any moulding production time. It therefore adds flexibility, high value result that is permanent with very small cost.

The application steps are very easy:

  • Make sure the PE/PP part surface is clean of debris and dry (no deep cleaning is necessary, just mild solvent can be used)
  • Use a stencil or screen to mark the surface to be printed
  • Apply the ink thinly and homogeneously
  • Remove screen or stencil
  • Flame print with a strong flame gun, making sure that high temperature is reached rapidly
  • Graphic is then encapsulated in the part.
  • Do tests when surface is cooled down

The main benefits that label-free graphics offer, are the below:

  • well established in the market. Already applied by rotomoulders and end users around the globe (water tank, marine industry, furniture, automotive etc.)
  • permanent, long lasting graphics
  • resistant to chemicals, UV and weathering
  • cost effective
  • flexibility
  • familiar application process (e.g. “painting”, stamping)
