Polish DSO TAURON Dystrybucja has announced an expansion of its teletransmission system to cope with the digitalisation of the power grid supervision system.

The initiative, supported by approximately PLN 39.6 million ($9.8 million) in funds from the country’s National Reconstruction Plan (KPO), will expand the teletransmission system in the MPLS TP standard [Multiprotocol Label Switching Transport Profile] in the area of operations of 10 of its branches.

Specifically, 300 complete MPLS TP devices will be installed and launched in power stations and other critical locations belonging to the company.

The system will provide the necessary functionalities and throughput for the digitalisation of the power grid supervision system.

According to the company in a release, the expansion marks a milestone in the company’s development in the use of modern digital technologies, helping to meet its current and future needs.

MPLS TP

TAURON’s MPLS TP teletransmission system consists of a comprehensive network of 800 to 900 devices. These devices, connected by fiber optic cables, enable the transmission of very large amounts of data at an extraordinary speed.

Commenting in a release was Marcin Marzyński, vice president of the Management Board of TAURON Dystrybucja for Customer Affairs: “Thanks to the project, not only will the level of cybersecurity increase, but the number and duration of power outages will decrease.

“The implementation of the system will also improve the quality of the energy supplied, and will also improve the reading of measurement data online and from smart meters. This will enable the preparation of offers and tariffs tailored to the individual needs of customers.”

Smart metering is one of many benefits TAURON hopes to reap from the system.

Additional benefits include:

  • Automation and remote operation of devices in energy facilities,
  • Automatic reconfiguration of the MV and LV power grid operation,
  • Diagnostics and analysis of network operation,
  • Increase in the level of cybersecurity,
  • Implementation of a modern Technical Security System necessary to protect critical infrastructure,
  • Digitalisation of power line protection,
  • Full online access to measurement data,
  • Digitalisation of technical security systems,
  • Possibility of building a TETRA digital radio communication system.

“The customer will receive a better and more personalised product from us. The benefits of the project will also be felt by our employees, because the system will enable them to perform some tasks remotely, without having to go into the field, which will improve their safet,” added Marzyński.

Funding for the system comes courtesy an agreement between TAURON Dystrybucja and the country’s Ministry of State Assets to co-finance the project ‘Modernization and construction of the TAURON Dystrybucja SA teletransmission system in the MPLS TP standard’.

The total value of the project is PLN 81.2 million ($20.2 million).

The project itself falls under investment A2.1.1 ‘Investments supporting robotization and digitization in enterprises’ of the KPO.
