Oracle Industry Innovation Labs coordinates stakeholder solutions

Oracle has opened the doors to its 30,000ft2 Oracle Industry Innovation Lab outside of Chicago, Illinois.

The working lab provides utility and other customers a hands-on environment to develop new ideas and create solutions using technology from Oracle and more than 30 industry partners.

Such collaborators include Copper Labs, EDX Technologies, Inc., Constellation Clearsight, Micatu Inc., and Samsung SmartThings, Inc.

With simulated environments, including a connected neighbourhood and smart studio apartment, the lab will enable customers to experiment with various technologies. These include sensors to help relieve stress on the electric grid, drones and augmented reality (AR) to improve safety and efficiency in field work.

Supported by Verizon 5G Ultra-Wideband, the lab will first focus on the energy and water, construction and engineering, communications and manufacturing industries.

Later this year, Oracle will open a new sustainability and mobility-centred lab in Reading, England and a construction industry-focused lab in Sydney, Australia.

Industry Innovation Lab and utility challenges

Various partners have stated their use of the labs to develop solution for the challenges facing water, gas and electric utilities.

In the face of regulatory, environmental and customer-driven demands, the technology produced and experimented within the labs aims to help utilities navigate these challenges.

“Many industries are at a crossroads as they look to navigate increasing regulatory, environmental and customer-driven demands,” said Burcin Kaplanoglu, vice president, Oracle Industry Labs. “We built the lab to bring together leading innovators…so we can jointly help customers shape bold ideas into powerful solutions that improve productivity, operational intelligence and sustainability.”

The lab further aims to provide a platform from which to deliver safe, reliable and clean water and energy resources.

“With so many public and private sector stakeholders working together to transition to clean energy, The Oracle Industry Lab creates a unique and important opportunity for collaboration and exploration,” stated Dan Forman, CEO of Copper Labs. “The innovations that will come from this will be key to decarbonising the grid.”

Michael Oshetski, Micatu CEO, said: “We don’t know what we don’t know. By working with the Oracle Industry Lab, we can help utilities develop solutions that will provide unprecedented visibility into what is happening on the grid so operators can avoid issues that threaten reliability and safety.”
